  • Darn, broke a chain

I just got my Max IV (1970's vintage) moving again (with new PowerMax 16HP engine) and I broke the right front chain. The adjustment sprocket lost a few teeth too.

Can someone tell me if the front chains are #40 or #50, and where would I get the correct chain socket? Thanks!

    Hi John,

Your Max is going to be running #50 chain. When you say chain "socket", are you referring to the idler sProcket that puts tension on the front chain to keep it tight? You have a couple options here: you can call up RI and get the correct part, or you can probably go to any other parts warehouse (Tractor Supply Company, or any other industrial supplier like Motion Industires (motionmro.com), BuffaloBearing.com, etc.) Since the sprocket isn't going to be submerged or really inundated with water/dirt, etc., you can probably get away with a discount sprocket from some place from Tractor Supply for a while, if you need it to get you rolling again...

    Good luck!

I don't know the number of teeth, offhand. I hate to guess, but it's probably 20 or 22 teeth. It'll likely be a 1/2" bore. You can always check the one on the side of the machine that didn't get damaged.
