So I rebuilt my 1970 Max II last winter and have used it all year.
I have found steep hills it will not go up, ditches it won't cross and have center posted it on logs and stumps I have gotten it stuck in the swamps of Jersey.
All said, it is a 7 1/2 on a scale of 1-10. Where it has let me down most is getting up and down steep creek banks and the steep banks down to the bay. I could give a list of what it does well but most of you guys already know those points. And yes I do LOVE IT, but that love is conditional, get stuck and the cursing starts! I think that addition of a winch will solve my creek bank problems.
Now it is time for snow! With a deep history of 4X4 jeeps everything is tougher in snow and getting stuck sucks even more. Between the cold and the slippery-ness (sp) getting stuck in "deep country" in the snow can be life threatening.
So the question is Tracks or no tracks? Though I have replaced almost everything I have not replaced the axles. I have a 1970 machine so I suspect I don't have solid axles. I don't have axle cages. I'm running 22" tires that already rub a little.
So if my knowlege is correct I need to replace the axles + bearings add axle cages get a set of rims and 21" tires and a set of tracks?
Before I make any investment I will see how well it does in snow on its tires. I'm in Maryland and Southern Penna. so the snow is wet and heavy for the most part. With my jeeps riding up in the snow was an issue and I fear it will be worst with an amphib.
So what would you do? I was damn tempted to buy that guys Argo with tracks for $2300 and sell my baby off. I already have $1700 in her but I just can't every see getting my money out of her if I keep fixing her.
No don't get me wrong I see money spent on a 6x6 like a game of golf, you pay your money, and have fun, and then you are left with the memories. you don't expect to sell your clubs at a profit let along your tee-time.
