  • max IV roll bar

Hey gang, I bought a older max IV several months ago and decided to put a roll bar on the unit for additional safety. Any one who has made one, vs a standard commercial unit. I have a friend in a body shop, and it appears that it would be sufficiently cheaper than the commercial unit. advise is allways welcome.

It would be fairly easy. There would only be a total of six bends in the tubing. Two for each "hoop" and then two very slight bends on the connecting tubing between the front and rear hoops. Some angle iron for the body mounts and you are done. If you search the site I believe someone has posted the measurements in the past.

I've searched far and wide on the site, and I can't find build information on the Max IV roll bar either. Could you point me to any threads?

This is the one I was thinking of when I said I thought the dimensions had been posted but they never were: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-a...cage-time.html

Here is a thread about the angle iron size for the body mounts: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-a...nd-max-iv.html

This thread mentions the tubing size that rdr used on his: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-a...-roll-bar.html

Sorry, I thought there was more than that.

Can anyone post the exact dimensions of the factory Max IV roll bar so that we have it for all? The factory roll bar is very expensive, but it looks like it would be dirt cheap to fabricate. Uncle Vin

                  roll bar

Roll bars are quite easy to make. You are probably wasteing your time looking for measurements. Only very hi dollar benders have the digital readout for angle of bend. Usually you have to use length of tube traveled into the bender to get angles equal. Every bender is different so this # wont help either. If you were close to me I would help you. I don't know anything about your machine but I assume it has a body seam. Read this http://www.6x6world.com/forums/gener...body-band.html I made my roll cage removable from the seam band and I added diagonal braceing since my pictures for strength.
If you have an electrician friend ask them about bending tubing, D.O.M., EMT, Rigid....It all bends the same, just takes a different shoe. Galvanized pipe must have the zinc ground off before welding and is not as strong as DOM (drawn on mandrel) because of the way they seam it. Pm me if you have questions

                    roll cage

It just came to me that there are no straight sides on an aatv...If you are wondering how to get measurements....first level your machine. If your shop floor is off, as most are, block it up. Use jackstands, 2x4s cedar shims etc. Now suspend a level, or leveled piece of steel from your ceiling to get measurements. Use this to make sure you have lots of headroom also. hitting your head is not fun! If measurements are off side-side say 1/4" one side 3/4" other side split it, make them both 1/2" somewhere you are not perfectly level. Remember, it is harder to make a rollbar strong than a rollcage.

I appreciate your comments, but I can't understand what exactly is so difficult in measuring/dimensioning the factory roll bar. The bar is essentially two trapazoids linked together. Dimensional measurements, plus simple geometry, should reveal the angle of the bends with precision. The bends themselves are easy enough to make by any metal shop with a pipe bending machine (of which I know of more than one). Building a factory bar will allow the use of the factory top and windshield, if so desired. That's my point of building the bar to factory dimensions.

Here are some pics and a plan

the bmp file is 3 mb and is not allowed on this website so i had to use rapidshare , rapidshare is notorious for deleting files so if you want it better get it ,or if you host files then retrieve it and repost on your server , (the size keeps it a printable pic)

You should be able to upload .bmp's to the gallery now too. I didn't realize I had left those out.
                          Thanks,

                          Mike

That was the most useful post that I have ever seen, on any board, at any time. You went above and beyond the call of duty here, and I personnaly appreciate it. Thank you. Mike, perhaps the plans could be a permanent addition to the site?

thanks Vin ,if you go to build it and find i missed a measurement let me know .
Mike , the problem with the upload was that your website didn't allow larger uploads than 1 mb , that bmp is 4.14 mb , to keep it printable ,anything under 1 mb does't print worth a darn
