  • New Question About Chain???

ok so my 1996 max iv uses #50 chain the only place i noticed a difference in the chain was from the transmission to the back axle i took the chain off and read the numbers it says # 530 the only difference i can see is that the 530 chain is a bit heavier duty with thicker links i was wondering if i could use the 530 chain through out the entire machine or just stay with the #50

My 2001 IV uses 530 o ring through out the entire machine. don't know what the drive train difference is in the years though.

When I called Recreatives Industries this past fall--one of the many times--I asked them what chain I should buy for my 2000 Max IV. They told me that I can use EITHER #50 implement chain OR 530 o-ring chain. They said that they are both the same size--meaning that they are both made to work on the same sprockets. The only difference is that 530 chain has the o-rings to help keep dirt out, thus supposedly causing it to last longer.

Actually, they did not try to talk me into using the 530 o-ring chain. They said that the 530 o-ring chain costs so much more than the #50 implement chain that you can afford to change the #50 chain twice (or something like that) for the same price as it would take to change it only once with 530 o-ring chain.

They did, however, make two recommendations on that note: 1) You should use the high-end, industrial #50 implement chain if you go that route. Don't use the cheap line of #50 implement chain; 2) You should, perhaps, use 530 o-ring chain for drive chain . . . the chain going from the tranny to the first axle. They suggested this because that chain takes the worst abuse and is the hardest to change. So, if 530 o-ring chain is better/does last longer, at all . . . it MAY be worth the expense in that case.

          I hope this helps.

i noticed one other difference between the #50 and the #530 first not all #530 is oring it comes without the orings to, and second the 530 has a thicker wall than the #50 making it less prone to stretching

Speaking from years of experience with various sizes of motorcycles..........o-ring chain is the only way to go regarding both performance and cost effectiveness even though it isn't cheap it still pays.
