Check the linkage and make sure that it is actually moving both of the diamond shifters on the T20. If both are moving fine then take out the diamond shifter on the side that is not working and inspect the pin. Make sure it is still there and not rounded off. If it looks fine then you most likely have a band / drum failure and need to pull the T20 apart. If you continue to use reverse you can do more damage if the drum isn't already scored.

I recently had a similar problem.Mine worked a bit on both sides in reverse though the right hand side was a bit better but not much in short it would only back up on the level with no obstructions.Mine also worked well in forward.I foillowed the instructions for adjusting the transmission bands as found here in the T20 Transmission forum,It was out of adjustment on both top plungers by 1/8 of an inch maybe a bit more.I'm still in shock as to what a difference that made. I would at least follow those adjusting instructions,I'll tell you it fixed mine to better than ever.

The drums aren't difficult to replace at all but they are expensive. If a drum is worn usually it is because a band has deteriorated as well so you would also have to get a new band. You wouldn't necessarily hear a noise though.

Also, Eldon has some good advice. If you were out driving and it all of a sudden just stopped working then adjusting the bands probably wouldn't help you but if you have never used the trans then you may want to try adjusting the bands after you check the other things mentioned above.
