  • 3 Cylinder Pontiac Firefly engine in my MaxII

I am rather proud of this mod. The 3 cylinder engine works some good. I am going to make another alteration though. The coupling of the engine to the transmission is done using a snowmobile belt clutch. Friggen Canadians Eh!
I want to make a clutch using a double 60 chain which I feel should be strong enough.
Comments, both good and bad are welcome as I am still new to this and want to get it right, at least the third or fourth time....The belt drive was not such a great idea as once it is wet, well you know what happens then.

The belt drive shouldn't be getting wet in the first place. The belt drive is really a great way to deliver power in these machines, and shouldn't be dismissed. Find out why it's getting wet and resolve the issue if you can. Kevin Griffin has a 4 cyl. Pinto engine in his blue Max II and uses the same belt drive. It works great as far as I can tell. It sounds really impressive on the trail. Nice and quiet, and gobs of power. My opinion is that you should stick with the belt and clutch setup.

What are the extensions of the body around the axles?

      Extensions

Those are the extensions for the tracks. There is a support beam that runs from the front bearing to the middle and rear as well. I can run like this when need be but is too wide for a lot of trails as it is with the tracks. I have plans to go out on Sunday am and will be removing the extensions and support beams to narrow it some. I hoope to have some 22" Goodyears by then as well....

Your belt looks loose. You may want to try a shorter belt. A shorter belt will also apply more torque to the transmission at a lower engine rpm. The better ratio will help with the belt slipping.

You used the transmission with this install? You didn't hook up straight to the fly wheel? Or are you talking about the AATV trans? I may have read this wrong?

            Transmission connected

T20 is coupled with chain to clutch, other pully is connected to crankshaft. I made a coupler which used the same bolt pattern as the flywheel.
