I've got a 97 max iv with the solid axles. I had the rear chain that goes from tranny to rear axle come off the sprocket. Upon closer inspection I see that the outside locking collar on the said axle had space between it and the outside of the tub. I'm assuming that I need to loosen both collars and slide it back into place and tighten back down? Or I guess I could possibly have a bad bearing that caused this to begin with. Is it possible for this to work loose and my bearings be ok? I'm still new to this and read the bearing/axle replacement thread but still wonder. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The outside locking collar could have just came loose by itself. Loosen the set screw and relock it on the bearing. If that was the only thing that happened though, it shouldn't have really affected anything else because the inner lock collar should have kept the axle in place by itself. Check the alignment of your sprockets between the middle and rear ones and make sure they are still lined up to tell whether or not the axle has moved. If it hasn't moved check your rear sprocket and chain for wear.
Have you checked the tension on that chain in the past? Perhaps it was loose to start with or the idler sprocket has a bad bearing or broke?
Just throwing some ideas out there.
