  • Service on max iv 2007 model

Hello Everyone ,I just purchased a MAX IV and i need to make sure its serviced and everything checked out I can get the oil changed and new filters ,but not sure on the chain tension ,and how to check the transmission fluid ,I am gonna grease it in the morning and check engine oil ,from what i can see the chains look good ,I dont think this machine has many hours on it ,because the tires still have the little rubber tips on them and dont think its ever been in rough places the body looks new and skid plates have very few scratches or cuts ,any help or cheatsheet on servicing this machine would be greatly appreciated thanks Karl Moses or you can call me 828-443-1298

three very important things First check atf level in transmission and make sure no one put gear oil in it . second make sure the trans bolts are tight and that the trans isnt leaking at all third on the trans there is a plug two third of the way down facing the back of the mahine pull it out and if you see/fell fluid there you are good chains push adjusters down until tight

You should get a manual. The one I have refers to all three Max models. With very few hours you might assume that it has yet not had any service.I would change oil/filter,transmission fluid,(you need to pump the fluid out) it takes in total about 1 U.S. quart it is ATF Type "F" and included in that U.S. quart is GM limited slip differential. The transmission has two plugs an upper "vented" plug that is the filler and a lower plug that is the level plug.Have the machine level when you do this.Use a good "O-Ring chain safe" chain lube.and lube the chains and a good waterproof grease and give each beaing no more than two shots of grease.Have the machine jacked up,wheels clear to set chain tensioners. You can also change spark plugs if uncertain of them, fuel filter, check air filter.By going over the machine from one end to the other you will now have a "start point" for your maintenance schedule.

If you still have the tips on the tires, it sure doesn't sound like it has enough hours on it to even worry about the tranny fluid. Guess you don't have an hour meter. The factory recommends it be changed around every 50 hours. That's a lot of riding, believe it or not. The T-20 won't magically explode if it goes beyond those hours. Lube your chains, grease your bearings & go have some fun. Your Max IV sounds too new to even be close to having any major issues pending.

I doubt as well that the T-20 will explode but from my experience my Max II had 34 hours on it when I got it.It had set around for some time even though only 5 years old.The fluid I pumped out of it was quite ugly looking perhaps due to setting.Your Max IV is three years old obviously has very low hours,it is possible even probable that it has set as well for extended periods. The T-20 is a tough unit also is one of the only components on the machine that cannot be overhauled by virtually anyone.Risk the $8 and change it! LOL

Perhaps how it was stored might make a difference. My SS was stored in a warehouse for 7 years when we got it, had very low hours. When we did change the tranny fluid just last year before Ashtabula, it still looked great. So maybe, the elements, freezing, thawing can contribute to the condition of the fluid. When in doubt, change it, I guess.

Karl, there's really no need to get someone to service it. Seriously, take Model Citizens advice and just go ride. As long as you have made sure there is oil in the motor and ATF in the trans you are good to go. If you have questions about how to do something particular just post up and someone can help you. You can do everything yourself. For your chains, assuming you have the idler sprockets, you will need to jack the machine up so that the wheels are off the ground. Then loosen the nut that holds the idler sprocket in place. Push down with a piece of wood, the end of a hammer, or something similar as much as you can while tightening the nut back up. Ideally you want 1/4" of play in the chains. That's 1/8" up and 1/8" down.

If you are still really worried about how to service it and need to see someone do it in person just come to a group ride and we will all show you there. Bring a grease gun and a wrench to fit the idler sprocket nuts. There's nothing to it.

Karl, you can always buy another machine for your wife and then you will always have a riding partner.
