max II with an 18hp motor and 22" tires will only go about 15 mph. Any thoughts or ideas to pursue would be helpful.

    Hey kane10
First thought I had was make sure your belt is good and not worn. A worn belt will greatly affect the performance of the machine. When not running the belt should be at the top of the driven clutch. When you rev it the belt should go all the way up on the drive clutch. I would also check and make sure you are getting full throttle at the carb. If the throttle cable isnt adjust right it may not be opening all the way. Hope I pointed you somewhere. Good luck.

Thank you for the thoughts, I'll give them a try. Do you know what the width should measure? Been thinking about fabricating plow mounts, do many people have an interest in them? I've noticed parts and accessories are rediculous for any 6x6's, why is this or am I just looking in the wrong places?

also try spraying some dry graphite lube in both clutches. i spray in the holes in the cover of the engine clutch and on the center where the belt rides. on the driven i hit the main shaft (under the coiled spring) and the ramps. the clutches in my racer stick sometimes and will bog the engine down. don't worry about getting the dry graphite on the belt. it really doesn't hurt anything. also, what 18 hp engine do you have? is it original to the machine, or a transplant? my wifes Max II had a jlo 340, but i put a flat twin briggs in it. that particular engine doesn't turn a lot of rpm's and her top speed is probably in the 18 to 20 range. another issue you can run into with a transplant is not having the correct carb, or governor spring. keep us posted on what you find

Racer had some good ideas too!!!

The top of the belt should be about level with the the top of the pulley on the driven clutch. That is when its not running. If its worn, it will sink in the driven more.
Not sure what parts and accessories your talking about or where you see the prices at. If on a budget, I always look for used parts. Post a wanted in the classified. i would get a used plow for a quad, or small tractor. cut off the frame and build one to fit your machine.

I am considering making several sets of plow mounts. I am currrently using one of my quads to plow, but a 6x6 should do considerabley better. Didn't know if anyone else would be interested in a pair of mounts at an affordable price.

I did notice a gap of about 1/4" between the belt and the pulley, on the pulley on the motor.

Hey I have this issue on my machine, but if you manually crack it wot it will STAY THERE, at least with the machine off........

That may give you and idea but the best way is the look at the driven pulley on the trans and see if the top of the belt is level with the top of the driven pulleys edge.

The governor will pull it close at a set rpm. If it don't then you don't have a governor or its not adjusted right.

I had a issue on a few different machines with it not going near max rpm and its all a matter of leverage with the linkages. The throttle levers I have just don't have the cable travel to fully hold the throttle open. I messed around a lot trying to figure a way out to open it up. I drilled new cable holes on the linkages, attached the cable at different spots and and got it better but nothing right. So I decide to just override the governor. Best mod I have done. Not only did I gain speed with more rpm but it accelerated faster too. Plus the way I did it, there is still a governor to pull the cable back so I dont need a return spring and its super easy to pull back. You just have to drive it like a car/truck/motorcycle/atv and not hold it wide open to long. Even if it does rev that high and dont blow a rod you still run the chance of overheating your oil and total engine failure. But if you own a 6x6 you are mechanically smart and that is obvious.

hahaha, funny that I posted in this thread and then today had the same issue with the clutch.

After pulling the motor out to do the axle, there wasn't enough thread to bolt it back in without pulling 1 washer off each mount bolt, honestly I don't know how that motor stayed in! I would have put longer motor mount bolts in but I suspect they are tacked on the underside.......... at least that's what my hammer said, so I had to just pull the washers which caused early clutch engagement symptoms. A tad longer belt would probably do it to but I will throw a new one on of the same size and go from there with replacing the isolators & bolts.
