  • max II help

I have traded what looks to be a Max II 1995 for a scope that i no longer needed. Great deal for me , but I dont know what kinda shape this bad boy is in. The electric start doesnt work, no big deal, can be fixed. It cranked up on first pull. Runs great on land but went into water and couldnt get out. front tires sounded like the chain jumped off and rear tire sounded like chain slipping on sprocket. Havent looked under seat and floor. Just wondering what kind of trouble I might be getting into. how much might this cost to fix. will it be worth messing with.

It shouldnt be too big of an issue. It could need a new sprocket because some of the teeth might be stripped, or the chain could just be loose. Take some pics and post them up and we could help you more. You got one heck of a deal on that trade!!! These machines are pretty easy to repair and parts are relatively inexpensive. If it runs great it is certainly well worth messing with.

Rip off the floor, seat and take off the top of the body to get a good look at what specifically is going on. Maxes are really simple machines, but need diligent maintenance to keep them going. It's pretty much self explanatory once you start looking at things. It's worth fixing, and might not be a big deal at all. Lots of good minds here to help.

      Good luck!

        Noises

With out looking you will certainly not know for sure as the others have mentioned. I had some of those same noises and it was just chain tension.
I was able to fix the auto adjusters and there is an adjustment for drive chain under the seat from the transmission.
As I am finding out more and more these guys have the experience. I would recomend getting new sprockets and chain as this is a real good buggy to rebuild and not a lopt of $$$
once you look at it, again as mentioned before it is a very simple set up. You should have no trouble at all.
        time and patience

Also, get all 6 tires off the ground and start rotating the axles to see the slop / play /wobble in all the drive components. the problem will be apparent.

That's good advice. I need to lift mine up and try that out.

I am always tinkering with my Max. I like to take plenty of digiphotos while I work so I can "remember" where all the parts go back when I'm done.
I ride a brown '96 Max 4 (skid plate, roll cage, 26" Rawhides, 20hp, custom winch and tow plates) with a 2K front winch and a 4K come-along for back up. I pack 20'tow-strap, 2 chains and 2 hooks,a jeep jack, and a big block of PT wood. Also an axe and chainsaw. And mechanic tools. I have a tote with a tarp and bungees. Spare parts. Two rifles. Hey, arent I supposed to be able to have three passengers?
