  • Sprocket set screw removal

Searched...can't find an answer...i now have a 2001 max II..I am trying to remove the set screw from the center axle sprocket. Does it have loctite on it? I can't turn it without stripping. Soaked with PB..no luck..have to get a new O2 tank for torches...but any other suggestions?

I removed a set screw by heating the collar with a map gas torch. You have to heat all of it except the area near the screw. You don't want to heat the screw. This will cause the collar to expand. If you've already stripped the set screw then it might need to be drilled out and the collar re-tapped.

The method that was described to me was to take a piece of angle iron and a very large hammer and drive the sprocket across the shaft, shearing the set screw in the process. I spent hours getting one out with a diamond bit on a Dremel. I've never tried the above method but was told its the only way!

I dont know max's that well so I can only assume the set screw is in a sprocket tube? Is that right?

If drilling dont work, and if you can get a angle grinder to grind it, you could then drill and retap a hole somewhere else in the tube? Im not sure if that helps or will work but just an idea.

If it's got red locktite on it heat's the answer, heat the collar up right around the set screw, then it should pop out surprisingly easy. If it doesn't, it may be seized in there, PB (WHILE HOT, works better ) then try again. Never tried Liflod's shearing method, if heat don't do it, that may. If you strip it, before drilling it and re-tapping, drill just the center, just enough to use a screw extractor (If you can get a small enough one to clear the threads to bite). Much easier than re-tapping.
