  • Couple Max II questions.

Hey everyone first post here, after reading some posts and getting questions answered before i even signed up i knew this place was the bees knees. Anyway i got a few questions still

First the front driverside tire has a slight wobble, much more noticable at high speeds, im hoping its a bent rim, but i have a feeling it might be the axle shaft, has anyone worked on one of these?

2nd is the powerband. its an 18 horse vangaurd, and the top speed is very impressive no complaints there, but the low end seems like its lacking, like driving through some light snow really feels like its bogging down, and i can almost say i know it wouldnt have the jam to climb a hill with 2 people in it, what can i start looking at for this?

    thanks!

    Hey Justin,
Best way to tell if its an axle or rim is to jack the machine up. Turn that side and watch the hub. If that wobbles you need a new axle. If the hub doesn't but the tire is take a look at the outer edge of the rim watch that. It could also be your tire.

For you lacking low end make sure the belt is good. The top edge of the belt should be level with the driven pulley or flat across. Also make sure your clutch, drive and driven pulleys are ok. If the spring is weak in the driven pulley it will ratio up into high range quicker. With the machine in neutral, rev it up and down while watching the belt and see if it is cycling through the ratios like it should.
Good luck with it and post your findings.

Take a look at your belt.......more than likely it will need replaced. My Max II with the 18HP Vanguard has all sorts of power. I pulled out one of our Farmall tractors that was stuck in the mud and I also pulled Hydromike's Attex 8x8 tank trainer up a long steep hill with it when he broke a weld on his main drive sprocket. The 18HP Vanguard in a Max II should have more than enough power than you will ever need. Take a look and let us know what you find out.......there will probably be a good bit of slack/deflection in the belt.

        hey guys another question.

does anyone know what the factory gas tank looked like with pics if possible? im guessing it was under the front dash, but when i picked this one up they had jerry rigged some cheap metal one on the back. i have a new one that would fit underneath the dash but im worried if thats not the factory location, a full gas tank up there will throw off the balance of it in the water or something like that.

If you will look in the Max section of the gallery there are several pictures showing the tanks. You are correct, it is under the front dash. Here is one picture to get you started:
