I just started on my max II today. I pulled the front two axles out to get a friend of mine to make wheel adapters so as i can go to 8" rims. It has a jlo rockwell single cylinder two stroke motor that seems to be locked up. I have a 16hp briggs vanguard waiting in the wings. What do i have to do to put this motor in & can the jlo clutch be modified to work properly. Ps. this is my first max since 1983 & had a killer hustler in 01,but i can assure you getting back to the max has been a long savoring wait. Woo Hoo!

Glad to hear you're breathing new life into the Max. As far as the clutch goes, the JLO one uses a tapered shaft and the Briggs uses a 1" keyed shaft, so it wouldn't work unless you took it to a machine shop and had them punch the center bore out to 1" instead of having the tapered bore. Then they'd have to machine a 1/4" keyway in there. You would also have to calibrate the weights in the clutch because the RPMs that the clutches engage are different for the JLO and the Briggs. It might just be easier to buy a 4 stroke 1" bore clutch.
As far as engine installation goes, you'll need to buy the 4 stroke conversion engine mounting brackets, a throttle cable and handle, and choke cable from Recreatives. You will also want to replace the spring in the driven clutch on the T-20 with a 4 stroke one, either green or red (red ones keep you in a lower range longer than the green spring does). These are also available from Recreatives. Call them up and they'll be more than happy to provide you with all of the information and parts that you'll need for the swap. You could just order the 2 stroke to 4 stroke conversion brackets and throttle and choke cables and be in good shape. But you would still need to route the exhaust too. I don't know how much they are, so you'd have to call Recreatives and find out.
