That would depend what you are riding in. If we go for a full day of swamp and mud, we wash and grease our machines when we get home. We mainly grease the outer bearings, as the inners aren't subjected to as much water and mud. If you are riding in drier conditions, then you wouldn't have to grease the outers as often.
I don't find the maintenance to be a big thing. If it is kept clean with lubed chains, you wont have unexpected failures.
