  • Max IV Drive Belt Tension?

Hey Guys. Thanks for all the help so far you guys are great. I have also found valuable information searching all the previous posts.

Hears the question. My new Max IV drive belt tension is 2" the book suggests 1 3/4" of slack. This is obviously how the factory set it, since I do not think that these belts stretch if they are like my Harley. Should I shim the engine up or just run it?

I adjusted all of the drive chains, they were fairly loose. I evpected them to stretch.

Rode 3 hours today with the whole family. 3 kids and my girlfriend. Rough trails, sugar sand, and rediculos swamp conditions, including ponds. This thing is AWSOME!

    Thanks again,
    Rutledge

The book suggests 1 3/4 and you have about 2". Most of us prefer the belt even tighter than that. Use some washers under the engine and space it up 1 washer at a time evenly around the engine. The clutch grabs the sides of the belt when it engages so having it a lttle tight will not hurt anything. If you grab both sides of the belt and pull them together, you can see the gap on the top of the clutch.

    MY OPINION :
If you can see some light between the clutch shaft and the belt, its not too tight.

The disadvantage of having the belt tighter than factory spec: The belt will not walk-off the clutches like the manual tells you it will. You may need to loosen the engine to get the belt off.
