2005 max IV 950T

Me and my dad just picked up this machine a week ago! It is a 2005 950T with the 27hp Kawasaki it only has 47 hrs on it and is in pretty much mint condition! Used it this last weekend and snapped the left rear axle outside of the bearing cage! had to drive it two miles out of the swamp on one track and two wheels was pretty impressive to say the least! We found that the tire pressure was at 15psi in all tires and from what I can find snapping the axle prob had something to do with the high pressure in tires! We were also pulling a heavy tongued trailer with wall tent behind which probably added to the issue! Guess we will take it as a learning experience! If anyone has anything to chime in about this machine please do I have noticed there isn't a ton of info on this particular model and would like to learn everything I can about it!

Adam, that's a well-equipped Max IV. Check out the Max manual section here: Max Maunals . The fourth link down is the track installation manual. That should guide you on the proper way to set the tracks up and hopefully avoid any more axles snapping.

Nice looking Max you have there hangloosehog! I like the engine protection your ROPS provides, I'm about to start making a new ROPS for my Max IV. Breaking axles sucks! Keep an eye on your tire pressure and if you haven't already done so, remove the drive chains to the front axles to reduce windup and binding.

My tire pressure was under 10 psi when I broke a front axle, I believe my breakage was due to chain windup. I now run my tracks with the front chains removed and I do not have any issues with tire slippage.

So even with the front chains taken out it will go through the mud like it has all the chains hooked up? If the new axle shows up by tomorrow im throwing it in and headed back to camp but need it to get through a decent stretch of swamp to get back to the wall tent!

I've got the same machine as you and have done a lot of testing with the rubber tracks. As Zuk says there's less stress on everything with no front chains. I've even run mine with just the primary chains. I didn't notice any difference in power however it did turn easier. The down side to this is you may have slippage if you're pulling heavy loads or big hills. I'm back to running all the chains because I do pull heavy loads. With the front and back tires the same circumference I've had no trouble with chain windup. Most of my testing has been done in snow which is more forgiving than dirt or mud. Air pressure is extremely important with rubber tracks as they're not as forgiving as an Adair type track. The three most important things to rubber tracks are air pressure, air pressure, and air pressure. Too little and you run a track off. Too much and you can possibly snap an axel. Worst case scenario is you get some slippage between the tires and the tracks, I'll take that over broken driveline parts any day of the week I don't usually pull heavy loads around with my Max so I have no real input there but I have taken a few ice huts on and off the lake with it. Most of my riding is recreational exploring into areas that cannot be reached during the unfrozen months. I DO climb a lot very steep hills, sometimes covered in deep snow and I can honestly say I have never been denied a path due to a lack of tire on track traction. I've had my tires spin in the tracks, but the spinning tire usually burns off the snow and hooks back up again getting you moving again. The only times it has been close to being an issue is when I'm down in a creek trying to climb back up the bank and out. If I get denied I just spin around and back out lol. Only once have I ever had to use my winch to recovery myself and it was coming out of a creek.

Back in Action just in time for the white stuff!!!!

After breaking an axle getting camp out in the swamp for the Minnesota deer season I got the "Toad" as we call it fixed up and back in action just in time for 17" of snow to dump on us the last weekend of season!! Now i will be able to get all of camp out of the swamp seeing how 4x4 atv's will not be much help!! The 950T went through this heavy wet snow like it wasn't even on the ground only issues we had were in the deep water holes where the snow turned to thick slush and would wall up at the end of the hole and stop you dead but back up and cut around the slush bank and you were right back on the move and had to do some ice build up removal on the tire guides on the track after going through the water holes but other than that we LOVE this machine!!
