what would you prefer to own a max 4 or a max 2 and which one is better in mud?

That is two questions so I'll try to answer them. I prefer the legroom in the Max II and how easily they handle and move through tight areas. I like the 26" tires on the Max IV for going through mud and tough terrain.

If a person could only have one, then Max IV with 26 inch tires and the biggest engine a person can put in it.

For me I usually take the Max II trail riding. It is much more comfortable and to me it has a much more stable feel to it especially when climbing steep hills. The only time I prefer the Max IV is when I am going fishing or anywhere where I will mainly be in the water. Like Jerry mentioned, the 26" tires are hard to beat in the water but I do think that the 22" rawhide III's give the 26" tires a run for their money when it comes to mud.

The best thing would be to personally drive each one and see which you prefer. I think if I was a little shorter the Max IV would be much more comfortable but at 6'2" my knees are always in the dash. If that was the only machine I had I would probably move the seat back and just ditch the back seat all together.

I've been driving a Max IV for the past 3 years. I recently had the chance to drive a Max II for a little ride. I prefer the Max IV's leg room over the Max II. In my IV, I can use my legs to anchor myself behind the sticks. In the II, I cannot brace my feet on the floor to stay in position. I also like the fact that I can see over a hill from my seat to see if I should continue as opposed to the Max II, where visibility is limited from the seat.

But, the Max II feels like a sports car compared to my IV. Turning is much easier as the machine is more responsive.
I can carry the wife and 3 kids with me in the IV.
My Max IV is somewhat easier to work on than a Max II. You do not have to remove a dozen wing nuts and lift the body to get to the engine.

I would not trade my Max IV for a Max II, but I would really like to own both. If you have kids and a wife that would like to go with you, get a Max IV. If its only going to be you, buy Max II.

Drive as many machines as you can before you decide what you want.

I do not own a Max II , but I do own a Max IV, so I can offer my choice of a Max model if it were me . I have seen the Max II,s in action on video lots of times ,and also observered a Max II that recently went on a muddy trail ride with us . From what I have seen ,this is my input :

For me , a Max IV is the best choice .I like the length of wheel base when climbing steep hills or climbing up a very steep creek bank. Since the body of a Max IV is much longer than a Max II , it has much less chance of rolling over backwards . I have seen this happen to Max II,s on video,s , because of the shorter wheel base . When climbing up a creek bank that is almost straight up in a Max IV , I can have my front wheels over the top or almost over the top , and my rear wheels touching the ground , most of the time . In situations like this , I can lean out over the front of my Max IV , and put my weight over the front wheels , making the front wheels bite for more traction , if needed . I feel a lot more stable in the water with the longer wheel base of the Max IV . I have often seen Max II,s high centered , when the Max IV,s or argo Big Foots have not , this is because of ground clearance . You also have a whole lot more choices in mud tires and tire sizes with a Max IV . The 26-27 inch Mud Bugs , Swamp Fox Plus, or Vampire tires , are the best choices of a mud tire for an amphib , if you don,t mind slower water speed .

For me personally , water speed means nothing if you can,t get out of the water, or out of thick mud when you cross it. What good is water speed then , when you amphious water tires are packed with mud ?
I have all kinds of room to modify things on a Max IV , to suit myself , but I would be "very limited" if I had a Max II .

On the flip side though ,I have a good friend who is building a Max II with 25 inch, Mud Bug tires on it . It will have close to 10 inches of ground clearance , with 3.5 psi . A Max II set up like this , with a 25 hp motor , will be an outstanding mud machine . .

These guys do make good points.

Liflod, I've got the opposite problem as you, my legs are long enough that I can brace myself perfectly in the Max II but they are too long for my Max IV to do that.
