  • Getting a "new" Max IV, have ??????

Hi I am Josh. This is my first post here, and I have yet to get my Max, but I went to test drive it today. It has a 440 polaris two stroke, and the hull and tires are in good condition. It also has a "cabin" with a frame. I know these might not be the right terms, as I am new to this world. Ok, so the questions...How is the power going to be full of people? Is this a reliable motor? What is a machine like this worth? Where do I find serial #s? What indicates year and what else should I look at before I start to use it heavily? I am going to be using it as a Hog Hunting rig, any way to quiet this thing down ALOT? Thanks for all of your help in advance, and I will definately get pictures up once I have it.

Hi Josh, welcome to the site. If the two stroke motor is original then most likely it is over 30 years old. The serial number would let you know for sure. It is usually on the plaque that is riveted to the tub either on the dash or the inside side of the tub. Do a search here in the Max forum for more information on finding serial number. Power shouldn't be an issue but for reliability and quietness for hog hunting I would choose a Max with a four stroke instead of the 2 stroke. That would give you the torque you need at low RPMs for pulling people and Hogs as well as the quietness and reliability that you are looking for. You can always swap motors to a four stroke but be prepared to buy new clutches as well since the 2 and 4 stroke clutches engage at different RPMs.

i would doubt its the original motor cause this thing is pretty clean. I will definately get some pictures up, I should be getting it tomorrow. if I had the option, I would defintely get a 4stroke, but this one is being traded for my jetboat. I will give you an update once I have it in my possesion. Thanks for the info.

I have the Max! It was not the original motor in the unit. And at closer examination could be pretty old. Overall its in real nice condition of an off road vehicle. It has newer covers on the seats, the cabin is in good condition, needing only a couple of rivets replaced. All of the tires hold air. All of the chains are in good condition and the frame seems straight and solid. Exhaust is an issue, as their really is no silencer to speak of, and that will need to be taken care of soon, but a friend of mine is a welder and said he may be able to custom make an exhaust. I don't think he has ever make two stroke exhaust before. Any hints? I got a parts motor with this one, I would assume that it was already used for donations on the current motor. I have read that this motor puts out around 38hp, is this accurate? I am thinking about the split shifter mod when I visit my welder friend, since the tranny is a little tempermental. All in all this is just the machine I was hoping to get(other than 2 stroke) The guy I got the Max from had a running JLO 440? and asked if I would be interested in buying it to keep as a spare. I said I would have to think about it. He didn't have a price, so what should I offer him, and what is it worth since I know those could be two different answers.

Here is a quick shot of my "new" max IV
