I was needing to lube my zerks for the first time last week and ran into the same problem. I remembered a handy little adapter that we used to have at an Express Lube I used to work at, but I couldn't find one anywhere. Finally I got on tooltopia.com and found it. Here's a link: ToolTopia.com - Search It slides onto the zerk from the side (90 degree angle) and is an awesome little tool. It just plugs onto the end of your grease gun, no tools required. I used mine and had all the fittings greased in a matter of minutes. It makes it easy to get to the outer wheel bearing zerks too without having to remove the tires. I highly recommend it!
BTW every axle bearing has a fitting. If I remember right it works out to 12 fittings (two per axle, one inside the tub and one outside, x 6 axles).
