  • Was runing great till transmission did not engage good

So I went out today riding after servicing it.It was runing great took my kids which are 4 and 7 and my wife.On the way back it wasn't turning good I had to really pull the sticks back to stop and really disengage one side totally to turn and it was making a loud grinding sound or creaking which ever you want to call it.I just changed the tranny fluid and put one quart of atf fluid minus 4 ounces for the gm stuff that another post talked about.Checked the tranny when I got home The fluid was at the bottom of the lower hole.Does anybody have any advice? It did this before when the fluid was low but fixed it with a change just bought this thing king of disgruntled any help would be appreciated thx

The bottom hole is the level guide so your fluid is OK provided your machine was level when checking. My experience with the GM limited slip additive(and I do use it) is for some time after the fluid change it would act similar to yours though in my case it was mostly in reverse. My theory on this and many here may disagree is that when you change the fluid you dump in either the tranny fluid then the additive or vice versa either way I believe that the additive when squirted in gets on the drums and bands unmixed with the transmission fluid and until it gets blended will act up.I alleviated this by thoroughly mixing the fluid with the additive before putting in the transmission. Also I have found if the transmission is not set up as good as it could be a new fluid change will highlight an adjustment deficiency. From my experience and in my opinion only.

After my last oil change (due to playing submarine, http://www.6x6world.com/forums/trail...july-11th.html ) I tried a GM transfer case fluid and so far it works great.....smoother, quieter operation. I'm gonna be using this from now on. http://www.6x6world.com/forums/trans...html#post64705

I wouldn't worry about it. The additive does quieten the chatter down a good bit but that's just how a T20 sounds. Nothing wrong with that.

SO WHEN I CHANGED THE OIL I USED DEXTRON 3 ATF FLUID ANS LUCAS TRANS FIX OIL 4 OZ the auto parts store said it was the same as gm transfer fluid I hope this was so.Also it ran great for the first half hour then started acting up,so I think it was blended due to it being fine from the get go any thoughts?thx

When you say it was acting up what exactly was happening other than the band chatter? You normally have to fully disengage and brake one side to turn by pulling the stick all the way back so that doesn't seem abnormal? How did it steer before?

The limited slip additive was meant for a rear differential with 80-90 weight oil, it may take a little longer to mix with the atf.

You are doing it correctly but typically you have to actually pull back on a stick to get it to turn. The faster you are going forward the less you have to pull back but to do a sharp turn at slower speeds you do have to pull back all the way on the side you are braking.

I am new to the t-20 as well and changed my tranny fluid, used a posi trac oil but added it after the dextron like the t-20 says on the tag. so i have 1 quart + 4 oz. I know this topic has many answers, but the trans did seen different for a few hours and then smoothed out and actually quieted down. The way i see it that's what the relief valve is for, I also read that the extra fluid will help with heat. since there is no pump in the trans the extra fluid just acts as a fluid bath. anyway just what i was thinking.

ok so im doing it right so why did it fade and seem like I had to slow way down and really pull on the stick just to get it to turn or stop.could the bands in the tranny need replacing? And it made a bad sound when tring to do so but not at all when I fist started this happened after a half hour ant thoughts thx?

I don't know. It's hard to judge without being there or seeing video, etc. It could be a problem developing with the bands but I would drive it some more and see if it still acts the same or not.

It really helps to figure out a problem on these things (most of the time) to jack up the whole car & run it as if you were driving it. There's no load in it & no resistance, so sometimes it's easier to hear, see or feel the problem. Maybe the T-20 only needs an adjustment which is explained in the How-To section.
