  • Newbie Max2 Owner 1977 JLO

Just purchased our first Max ( 1977 RED Max2 w/JLO) We need to know everything!
Engine starts hard cold with lots of cranking but fires up great when warm and runs strong! Has original bogger tires in center and we could use a RH one if anyone knows who has one. Just ordered a new muffler canister from RI and a gas cap to replace ours! Good people and good support! now we just need to find a source for a replacement fuel valve for the dash and figure out where the slight bit of water is getting in!

    Welcome Aerial!

hard cold starting could be a number of things. Your choke could be out of adjustment, you could have a crankshaft seal or intake gasket leak somewhere, you could have low-low compression. Does it run well immediately after it starts from cold versus restarting when it's warm? Does it sit and idle without any input from you?

Lots of folks have parts they'll part with. Post a specific ad in the Parts Wanted section, and someone will get back to you ASAP. A replacment fuel valve can be found relatively easily; it doesn't have to be the OEM part if it doesn't matter to you. A snowmobile or lawnmower supply store often have them for about $10 or so.

We started out by modifying the battery tray and hold down to accept a medium car battery and welded the Polyethylene Hull in a few spots, Replaces some #40 Chain, adjusted all of them and lubed them all nicely! So far it's been very easy to service and fun to play with. We could use a replacement center tire/wheel for RH side but we have a worn tread left one on it for now. We just need to improve cold starting amd maybe install camper foam tape for a body seal. are new canister is on the way from RI so well cut the elbow and re weld that to the new can and hopefully have a slightly quieter machine then .

Thanks, I think it is all about AF mixture at starting and us not having any idea what it likes yet, It has a JLO engine and looks like a MIkuni carb. and a semi effective primer. still has a choke know but I think that might have been for the original carb? I just assumed it did nothing as it has a primer. I have not even looked to see if choke is hooked up to anything.
It runs great as soon as it starts I sometimes have to work the throttle during cold start but as soon as it fires It's hands off and you can jump on it cold too and it accelerates fine!
