  • Braking and steering when engine stalls? (newbie)

I purchased the Buffalo version of the MAX ATV last week and it is scary but also fun to drive.

As I need to use it to transport > 10 tons of rubbish out of a wood, downhill (up to 20% slope) and then uphill (up to 30% slope) to the road, I got worried about the ability of Max to stop when things go wrong, in particular when the engine stalls... and with maximum load...

As per documentation, the Manufacturer website is showing 2 disk brakes and even with the engine stalled, you have significant drag from the drivetrain (our machines are not exactly a low rolling resistance design...)

Thanks, do you think you can still 'steer' with the engine stalled?

The engine stall is not a problem, the problem would be if you snapped a chain. That would leave no control on that side. Emergency brake system (Foot Break) i think is a feature with the Max line. Someone chime in on this one. I know the Argo line has this emergency brake.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

It will steer fine with no engine power. The foot brake, when adjusted properly will also stop you and hold you on a hill.

The foot brake will stop you when properly adjusted on a steep hill provided you get on the brake before it has gained momentum. If ever there was a need for hydraulic disc brakes it is here!

It will be fine doing the job you mentioned. The trick with going down hill is to use the foot brake to control your descent while leaving the steering levers forward, so you still have engine braking. You can still correct the steering if you need to, but it is much more controlled if you are using the foot brake at the same time.
