Got the trans done cleaned the carb runs like a top now but the brakes parking brake/ emergency brake still sucks anyone know a better way to put a better braking system on these things? I broke a brake band and it about killed me couldnt get stopped and about went off a cliff. The parking/emergency brake has plenty of pad I cleaned the rotors, sanded the pad to get off any glaze adjusted them and they still suck wont stop you for anything if you really needed them to. Any suggestions? Max iv 2000

I agree about the brakes. I've also cleaned the pads and replaced them and I've cleaned and sanded the metal drum. But they still won't actually do much. If I stand on it, lifting myself off the seat (and I weight about 230) it barely works.
I was going to see about scoring the drum a bit to create "divits" that the pads could rub against. I figured that it might help.
Anyone got any solutions.
By the way, the worst I got it was when I got stuck going up a hill and tried to change into reverse. Going backwards down a hill with no way to control direction is not the best way to achieve long life.

I think the 3rd photo courtesy of Jerseybigfoot may be the way to go. I upgraded my 89 max iv from drum brakes by adding rotors to the front axles and using Polaris Predator calipers in home made brackets. The problem lies in the small dia. of the rotors. They are at too much of a mechanical disadvantage even with the hydraulics to stop all the moving mass. Interested in hearing other peoples experiences.

The other day I puller the brake bands and cleaned them up with brake cleaner as well as the drums. I also lightly sanded the drums and pads figuring this would give the brakes some more bite. The results were disappointing, I didn't notice any difference. My Max just rolls along with me stomping on the brake.
I'm wondering if the brake material is the problem? It still seemed a bit slippery to me after a good cleaning and light sanding.
What if I just used a strip of rubber instead of the pads? Or maybe some kind of other material?
What if I applied a Rhino Liner to the drums? I probably wouldn't get much life out of the pads, but if this gets me to stop then I don't care. Just throwing out ideas...I'm looking for a cheap solution.
