I just picked up what I believe to be an '89 Max II on Craigslist. I've wanted one since I was a kid, but this is my first. The throttle calbe is broken, but other than that and a bad paint job, it's seems like a good deal for $1,000.

congrats on the purchase. just be careful... these things tend to multiply. I have a throttle assembly and cable from a max II for sale. it was replaced right before i got the machine, and I put a different style in it.A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

No need for the throttle cable (for now)... I started tearing it apart last night and it needs a few things first:
A good cleaning, fabricate a new wiring harness, buy front chain tensioners (missing) and then go after the bearings (the middle right wheel moves around). The guy I bought it from said that was the design, but I knew better. I just hope it isn't too bad. The motor is someswhat confusing for me... RI said it came with a 14 HP Vanguard, and it has a twin cylinder Vanguard, but the recoils starter housing says "9 HP" which I don;t think they ever made. The motor looks offset a little, so I'm thinking it's been out, but the installation looks too clean for a swap (especially for someone that would go with "any old engine they couls find)

i believe the 14 vanguard is the smallest briggs v-twin. probably the recoil starter broke and the PO found a used one that fit. it's probably the same assembly with a different sticker. you could call a briggs dealer with the model, type and code and get all the specs on it.
not sure if Tom still has them, but here is a listing for your adjusters. http://www.6x6world.com/forums/parts...adjusters.html
