    I have a max II with 12" rubber tracks and would like some opinions if an argo with bigger tires and wider tracks would perform better or a heavier 8x8 with tracks would do better.

    the only 2 things worst than a Max II with 12" rubber tracks is a 6x6 without tracks or with 13" plastic tracks. everything else is better.

    the wider, the better

    the more clearance under the belly, the better (newer Argo run tracks on 25 inches tires)

    it's as simple as that. but I have seen 6x6 on 22" tires and plastic 18" tracks doing just fine, while a 8x8 on 25" tires and 20" rubber tracks is the ultimate setup (but will have to be towed from time to time by a 8x8 Centaur with aluminium cleated wide tracks)

      What year argo should I look for in a 6x6 that will run tracks on bigger tires.

        not sure about the 8x8 bigfoot from late 90s but the avenger/frontier with the newer body can.

        but keep in mind anything on the 20" rubber tracks will do very good in snow.

          I have a Max II with tracks and it isn't nearly as bad as you make it seem in the snow. The name of the game with any machine in either snow or mud, is exerted PSI. The lighter a machine is, with more contact area on the tires or tracks, the better.....a heavier machine will sink down more. How much snow do you plan on using it in? Unless you're in extremely deep powder all the time or climbing large drifts, there is no need to sell your machine and go and buy another one.

            Me too I would try the setup you already have as I could be enough for whatever you do with it.

            (I'm in Canada and use 18" plastic tracks on a 6x6)

                If anything I would say get a 8-10 inch piece of baler belt and some 20-22" track cleats and mount the cleats to your track and then bolt the bailer belt up to it as well and just run some plate steel on the backside of it all and VOILA!! 20-22" tracks that will make your maxII go anywhere you need it to in the winter.

                  Sorry I couldn't find a 20-22" track cleat but a simple google search turned up some 16.5" cleats that would give you a lot more surface area and I know tractorsupply.com has 6" wide baler belt for a couple bucks a foot .

                    you can get a roll of belting cheaper on ebay and use raw steel or aluminium channel to make your own cleats

                    my only concern is to find cheap and good tire guides

                      I am using it in northern Mn and have not had it out yet just wondering what to expect next week when I go. There is probably 35-40 inches on the ground. I am running in a packed trail for most of the time but when I get off trail not sure what to expect. How hard would it be to make my tracks wider.And how do they work with my present setup. does all the width go to the outside?

                        Well if 1 out of 2 ain't bad, Bolducs metal tire guides seem pretty good on an Avenger, but they sure fail the cheap test!

                          I heard 4$ each for the plastic guides from argo (including hardware). It look like the cheapest available

                            Smog I meant attaching the cleats and belting to his original track to make it wider and more aggressive not a whole new track completely.
