  • Battery upgrade

My son-in-law needs a new battery for his maxIV, he has a spare almost new car battery that he wants to use. We have plenty of room for battery size. Are there any problems will rechargeing with the current system??

    Snappy,

I have a deep cycle marine battery mounted in my Max IV for fog lights winch etc. Most Briggs engines came with a 10 - 20 amp charging kit which isn't all that much and doesn't really recharge the battery fully. I keep the battery charged when not in use with a garage charger. A lot of people use a battery tender of some sort. In my opinion your better off with a deep cycle battery than a standard automotive battery.

With that said the only time I had a problem was running my 4 fog lights and 2headlights for an hour at idle. I shut the machine off and then it went click on the restart. One pull on the pull start and I was back in business.

P.S. I'll always have a pull start on my machines after that experience

      No problems at all.

The Briggs charging system is pretty minimal. I have a dual battery setup in mine. My second battery is an auto group battery that I had spare in my shop. It works well for my needs. Regular use of the Max does keep my batteries charged. During periods of non use, I will use a battery maintainer as needed. Using the winch for extraction or plowing sucks the juice out of the stock battery. With both batteries, I usually don't worry about non-starts. The pull start is handy to have but I find it a pain to access if the cargo area is full of gear. I keep meaning to extend the recoil rope to reach out to the rear vent at the back of the upper tub so I don't have to pop the top open to reach it.

Not nearly as painful as being 5 miles out, no pull-start, and a dead battery

That's for sure micmac! When I had my old Argo, no one made those neat little portable battery jump start units with the air compressor and light combo. I had to carry an extra battery and jumpers because there was no pull starter and there was no room under the hood for dual batteries. I do want to extend that pull cord though. I put game and tree stand carriers on the rear of my Max and when it's loaded down it's tough to get to the engine but it's available if I need to get to it. That's very reassuring when your deep in the bush and by yourself.

I have a pull start on mine, just the other day I found how nice that is. My son-in-law doesn't have that ability.
My way of thinking this should be on every engine based on how they are being used. It certainly would put your mind at ease when you are out by your-self.

I have been meaning to extend my pull cord to the firewall of the argo! It's impossible to pull it from the top. I found out thanksgiving when I had starter issues, it's a 2 man job!!!
I have upgraded to an Optima Yellow Top Battery. You can see it here.

                  Here's the Optima part #D35 (9040-218)
I have a set of fog's, and run a trolling motor in the water. I do have to use a battery tender for the times it sits over a month.
