my max reverses great on the right side but its pretty weak on the left side. i know it is the t-20 adjustments have to be out, but what i need to know which bolts on the t20 would adjust the reverse top or bottom and do i need to tighten the bolts or loosen them? thanks for any answers.

The best way is to do a complete adjustment.

thanks man and one more question should the belt ride all the way at the top of the motor clutch if u put it in nuetral and rev the engine up because mine stays about an inch down in the motor clutch

Under normal conditions....Yes. With an older machine you never know what is original or has been changed. If the clutches are not matched, you could have the belt bottom out in the secondary before it reaces the top of the primary. Wrong belt or bad adjustment could cause this also. Start at idle and watch your belt as you SLOWLY rev the engine. Is it starting at the top of the secondary, actually a tiny bit above? Is it going all the way down?

well i know the clutches r the ones from the factory because we've owned the machine since 94 or 95 so that eliminates that. but the belt is brand new and the correct size and it does sit slighty outside of the tranny clutch about an 1/8 of an inch to a 1/4 inch. the belt when i slowly rev it sinks down in the tranny clutch. how much should it sink down into the tranny clutch? and the belt is squeezed by the engine clutch but it doesnt go to the top it stays about an inch from the top. does this sound right to u or is this sounding like the problem and thanks for all your help

If it's the right clutches and right belt it has to be an adjustment issue or malfunctioning clutch. They should be paired up so that as the pimary squeezes it to the top it falls to the center in the secondary. Is it going all the way down in the secondary? Try adjusting the belt tension...ATV and Snowmobile Belts - by Dayco To tell the truth, I've had better luck getting it right by over tightening and then backing off the adjustment....it may take a couple times till it's right. What year is your Max? MaxII or MaxIV? What engine? I do have a Max II from the 80's, 18hp tecumseh, that is doing something similar.....I haven't had time to try to adjust it out yet. I was about to tear it down, paint the frame and put in new bearings/bushings.

The belt should allways ride flush on the secondary (smooth belt) and at the bottom of the bumps on a belt with those little "teeth" or bumps on the outside of the belt, if the belt rides further out it will eventually concave the belt and lose grip at slow speeds under hard going. most of the Max line has a small amount of engine mount adjustment to get the belt length right, if the primary is not closeing enough it is usually a result of worn internal primary parts, shims, springs, etc.

thanks buggy man and mine is a 94 or 95 max II with an 18 horse briggs and stratton vanguard. i finally figured out the situation today though my clutch on the engine when im riding is not engaging but in nuetral its rides the clutches like it supposed to so im guessing some worn springs.
