  • Thru-Hull fitting location question

I am in the process of installing a bilge pump in my Max IV
I was planning on installing a marine Thru-Hull fitting in the rear.
I would prefer not to have to go through both of the formed layers of the upper hull for ease of installation. However, if I install it through the uppermost portions of the rear of the lower(black) tub, will the fitting be below the water line under a heavy load?
Any ideas or installationpics are much appreciated.

The Max IV's that I've observed (no personal experience here) seem to sit pretty level in the water. as it provides the most room to work, I would mount the pump toward the front of the machine and route the discharge hose out through the upper body in an area where you can see it from the drivers position. that way you can lean forward and to the side the pump is on to get the water headed toward it, and also see when it stops pumping so you know to shut it off. Bilge pumps don't like to be run dry.

i own a '95 max Iv. i put two bilge pumps in mine because the middle of the lower tub is about 2 inches higher than the sides. as for my discharge locations, i put both out on the sides above the lip that joins both tubs together and slightly in front of the front seat area. this way you can see when and how much the pumps are discharging. if i can figure out how to post pics i wil do so. also, i positioned both pumps in the middle of my max because as racerone3 stated the max IV does sit level in the water most of the time.

Definitely install the fitting in the upper body.

From the videos of Busco and watching the Max IV's i agree with all the above. If you mount it in the bottom tub it will be under water with 2 adults in the front. Race also made a good point about Bilge pumps do not like to run dry. This link will take take you to a video that i shot at Busco.

At 3:26 you will see member Robbie(RDR) and his wife in his Max and how it sits in the water. Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips guys. I am planning on installing this compact Rule automatic bilge pump with a built in electronic timer that runs every few minutes for a few seconds on automatic mode. It does have a manual switch option as well. It looks like it will do the trick nicely and if not, I will try another setup.

the rule pump is the ones i have installed. the automatic feature is great, and pulls very little off the battery. on occasion, my pumps have been left on over nite with no drain to the battery. when working, they throw water out about 2-3 feet. great little pump.
