I just picked up this Max IV, everything is there I just need to put it together. Someone stuck a Arctic Cat 440 in it not sure I'll stick with that, haven't heard it run yet. Anyone have a preference of 2 or 4 stroke in one of these? Good thing about putting together from scratch is I get to do some of the mods I've read about here. Anything special I need to look for while putting it back? It has a serial number 5525 anybody know what year that might be?

With a metal gas tank, and that low of a serial #, you are looking at a pretty early machine. I would guess 1975-1977. you can call recreative with the serial # and find out for sure.
If you plan to use it for trail riding or hunting, I would go with a 4 stroke. If your main goal is going fast, then the 2 stroke is for you.A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Cool find, MGC....
I have a 1975(ish) RIM, which is essentially the same thing as a Max IV, just rebadged. I have a Chaparral G50B (484cc two stroke) in mine, which is original equipment. I'm not the hugest fan of two strokes for trail riding, but I've really done quite a bit of it with this machine. The MaxIV/RIM is geared quite low, so the extended RPM range of the two stroke doesn't make the hugest amount of difference as far as top speed goes. I haven't GPS'd mine, but I'd estimate it's in the mid-high 30mph range. Plenty fast enough for trail riding. Just last year, I put some 26" tires on it, and that made quite a difference over the 22" size I had on before. I had aspirations of yanking the two stroke and putting a small V-twin in it, but haven't gotten around to it (read: I don't have one). Not because I dislike the two stroke that much, it's just better suited to other causes.
If you're starting from scratch, check out a LOT of the Max IV mods that folks have done here. Mid-engine machines have been done once or twice, which takes the high engine and puts it down in front of the transmission. If your top is trashed beyond use, or won't clean up to your expectations, I have a couple MaxIV tops (one green, one tan) that are looking for new homes....
