  • Requesting Advice on what to look for in an AATV

    Hello all.

I'm in Florida and think an AATV would be more useful than a traditional 4 wheeler (The floating part especially). I've been searching around and have located A MAX II in GA that the owner is asking 3K for.

From the description it seems someone has done a lot of mods such as ligthting and electrical (which is kind of a red flag item for me).

Is this a reasonable price range? And, what are the big things to look for when looking a prospect over? I'm guessing that it will be difficult to find water for a test float, so is there any way to check for leaking seals, etc?

I'd sure appreciate any help on this.

    Thanks Again

    Hi Basslies,

If you will search the site, there are a good many posts on what to look for and in the how-to section there is a buyer's guide: what to look for when buying a used amphibious ATV

It's hard to say what the Max II is worth. If it is a 2007 with a high HP motor then 3k is a good buy. If it is a 1977 2 stroke with rotten balloon tires then it's not. If you can tell us more about the max someone may be able to help.

To add to Mike's post I wouldn't neccesarily be turned off by owner mods. Most of these machines end up modified. As long as the mods were done right they shouldnt be a problem.

You can test the machine seals for leaks by pumping water into the tub.The owner may not like this idea though.Unless it's quite new there will be leaks and you'll be able to tell from where. My experience when buying something used is unless the price is dirt cheap, newer and in very good condition is the better buy overall. Mods probably won't be a problem unless they are a makeshift patch to bypass something that failed etc.To me $3000 if the machine has no accessories to speak of it would want to be in pretty good condition or quite new needing some overdue upkeep. If you get into chains, axles and bearings as well as possible engine repair etc the cost can be substantial.A good working T-20 transmission would be my #1 concern, everything else after that.
