  • 1985 RI Max ll

Just wanted to say I've had my Max for about two weeks now and I Love it, never had a 6 wheeler before and I've owned a quite a few 4 wheelers over the years and I'll take a 6x6 over a 4 wheeler any day. Here is a few pics if I can get them to load up.FILE1173.jpgFILE1172.jpgFILE1193.jpgFILE1183.jpg

That max II looks to be in really good shape. I like the roll cage. Very unique.

Built the roll cage in my garage, I spent the last two weeks cleaning it up and fixing all the squeeks and rattles. It has a 16 hrs Tecumseh engine. Runs really well but seems like it needs more power on the low end. It will run out of power on a steep incline unless I keep the rpm's up.

Would you happen to know what oil the T-20 transmission takes. That's the only thing I haven't changed yet, the oil in the transmission.

You did a good job on the cage. For the T20, there are a ton of threads on the transmission fluid in the transmission forum. Here is one that should help: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/trans...maintance.html

Does the engine actually bog down like it's a power issue, or does the machine just not seem to have the speed it should when climbing?

The 16hp Tecumseh engine should really have plenty of power to lug your Max II around. I'd check the drive and driven clutches to make sure they're engaging correctly, and perhaps invest the time to take them both off and inspect them. The clutches are often a neglected part of our machines, and usually end up getting gummed up from dust/mud/grease from years of use. It doesn't take much gunk to make a big difference in performance.

The engine don't really seam to bog down, it just seams to not have the power to go up the hills slow. If i hit them at full throttle it will make it. As far as the clutches at full throttle in neutral the belt is about a inch from the top of the clutch. My top speed is around 18 mph. It just feels like the engine needs a little more throttle.

sounds like you are in desperate need of a new belt, or to adjust the one you have. when a belt is worn out, you lose "low gear" and "high gear" and only have mid range power

With the engine off my belt moves up and down about a inch and a half. What of the proper free travel of the belt and how do you adjust it.

Check out this thread, expecially the third post. It has a nice picture.

Thanks for all the info, I think the belt may be the problem, there is almost 2 inches of free play on the belt. The belt also squeals when I first give it throttle. I've searched the forum but haven't found anything on how you adjust the tension on the belt. Is the motor mounts slotted to allow the engine to move.

You got it, the mounts are slotted to allow adjustment forward and backwards as well as side to side.

I adjusted the Belt, slid the motor back about a half inch, but there is a lot of give in my motor mounts, I adjusted the belt tension to about an inch of deflection when you push lightly on the belt. If i push on the belt a little harder I see my motor mounts flex and the motor actually moves toward the transmission and im back at the 2 inch deflection on the belt, when you release the pressure on the belt the motor goes back to its correct position, Is this normal, it doesn't seem normal. I took all four mounts out and they are not broke or cracked or anything but they do seem really soft.

Yeah, that is pretty normal. You should have a stop that keeps the flat stock metal part of the engine mount from sliding forward on the clutch side. When you slide the engine back you should readjust the stop to keep it from torquing too much. If it is still too much movement, Recreatives Industries offers some replacement motor mounts that are billet aluminum with a very thin piece of rubber infused on top of them. You can order those if you like but it's not necessary.

You can also make your own. I just ordered some round stock of polyurethane and cut out my own. I would check to see if you have the anti-torque stop first though. If not, you can just get a freeze plug and make one yourself with an L-bracket to mount it to the frame.

You can barely see the stop in this picture from Recreatives Industries website at the bottom right of the picture. It is mounted to the top of the frame with two bolts:

Is mounting the motor solid on aluminium blocks a bad idea.
