  • No drive on left side

I have a 2001 maxII. My neighbor took it for a 5 minute ride out of my sight and tried to cross a log. He called me and told me he didn't know how to shift it into reverse so I told him how. He calls back and asks me to come look. I don't know what he did, but I now have no forward or reverse on the left side. He said there wasn't any noises or anything, but his 5 year old disagreed. Haven't had a chance to open it up, but does anyone have any ideas? Do you think he snapped a band or is there something else that breaks in the shifter maybe? I have looked around and searched but havent found anything...thanks for the help.

It's probably just a broken shift pin. A fairly common issue. If you pull the diamond shifter out of that side of the trans, you should see a pin that sticks out the bottom, if it is sheared off flush, then that's your problem. If you can get the broken pin out, it is a few dollar repair. If not, you will have to replace the diamond shifter. (about $35 bucks). you can then drill a hole in the bad diamond shifter opposite the existing hole, stick a new shift pin in there, and have a spare for the right side. I carry a diamond shifter in my trail bag that is drilled for both positions, that way if I break one I can just put a pin in the needed position and replace it pretty quickly.

Could be a chain, could be a band, could be the transmission input shaft. Could be lots of things. The input shaft is unlikely, that would disable the RH side or both sides. I think it's more likely to be a chain.

His 5 year old disagreed, lol. Nice, young ones always tell the truth when they should lie or lie when the should tell the truth, lol.
I would go with racerone3 on this. Especially if the left stick seem to move the same travel as the other side.

I'd agree also...if it happened while shifting, but since the guy didn't know how to shift it it must have happened while still in fwd.

There is no such thing as fwd on a 6 wheeler.

Larry, you are too young to be getting old timers desease.......Think hard, I'm sure you'll remember working on one of these shifters before. Fwd is down, rev is up.

You haven't been working with the acetone in a small shed again have you?

Sorry my mind was in the F-our W-heel D-rive gutter. Not Forward. I was wondering why you would say that, lol.

And the 5 year old said there was noises, so assuming the guy didnt tell the thruth and he was trying to shift.

Oh come on, do we have to get back on subject? I was having too much fun picking on you.
The kid saying yes to the noises is what made me think of the chain. I've never snapped a shift pin, but I wouldn't think it would make too much noise. They are too small.

And for a teaser: The tan MaxII in your video (http://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-a...how-video.html) is now green and I removed your split shifter........The rest of the story will come when it's finished. Should I hook up the heat option in the leather seat? OOOOPS, too much info for today.

Cool, cant wait to see what all you stole from your junkyard buddy!

I was thinking, and assuming Racerone3 was too, that he was jamming gears with an already worn shift pin.

yep, that was my thought. He called to ask how to shift, didn't understand the "T-20 shifting dance" and went to slamming the shift lever up and down. Not that I've ever gotten frustrated trying to shift one and gone to slamming stuff

Thanks for the help. I'll try to pull it apart in the morning and see what I find.

I did this three times on my tank trainer, once on the Chief trail machine, and once on an old ST/400. As a matter of course, I gusset at least one side of each sprocket on my center axles.
