  • Which way should the wheels spin?

If a MAX is jacked up in the air so the wheels are off the ground, I assume that in neutral that both sides should spin freely back and forth by hand. I assume that when in reverse or forward both sides should spin freely in their respective directions and should not spin in the opposite direction.

I noticed on mine that when in reverse the left side spins in reverse fine, but the right side will not spin in reverse, but it will spin forward with some resistance.

I also can't seem to get it into forward gear at the moment...

    Help?

as far as not being able to spin, make sure you plungers are pushed the correct way. You could be braking causing it not to turn. For getting it in forward, there is a dance required. Make sure your plungers are in nuetral (not pushed it or out), and give the tires a little wiggle before shifting. You may need to shift and wiggle the tires at the same time. This wiggle needs your gears on your t20 to turn a little.

The wiggle trick worked. So in forward gear, both sides will spin the correct direction, although they have more resistance than when in neutral. In reverse the left continues to spin fine - seems to move more freely than when in reverse. The right is still locked up. I'm still a noob, which way should my plungers be to get this in reverse and out of brake?

Your diamond shifters shouod be pointed to the back and your stick should be pulled back for reverse. I believe the top should be out and the bottom in. If thats wronge reverse it..lol. I'm trying to picture the set up in my mind sorry.

OK, Here is what I found...
In forward, with the left or right sticks pushed all the way forward or back, the wheels are locked on that respective side.
In forward with the left or right sticks pushed back a little, the wheels on both sides will spin free in either direction on their respective side.

Neutral wheels spin free either direction.

In reverse, with the right side stick pulled all the way forward or back, the right side wheels are locked.
In reverse, with the right stick pulled back slighly, the right wheels will spin free in both directions.

In reverse, with the left stick in any position, the wheels will spin free.

The other thing I noticed is that the top right plunger (when your looking at the T20) does not come out all the way no matter how hard I pull on the stick. All the other plungers seem to have more travel. Is this normal? I made a plunger adjustment tool and am tempted to just start cranking on the bolt till the plunger comes out, but don't want to break anything.

Removing the bolts on the plungers isn't a good idea because they can go back inside the case and cut the oring when you pull them back out. That can cause it to leak. Be careful when you put that bolt back in and try to slowly work the plunger back out. As for adjusting them, do not attempt to get the plungers to come in or out of the case the same distance. That is not how you adjust the transmission. The plungers will not be the same distances because the bands will not be worn the same. Some may be in a little further than the others.

If you will search the site, you will find a lot of posts on how to properly adjust the T20. Start with this one: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/trans...html#post34893

For trying to see which tires rotate when it's off the ground, if it is in forward, you should be able to turn them with the sticks forward and they should stop when the sticks are pulled back. When in reverse, you should be able to turn the tires when the sticks are pulled back and they should stop turning when the sticks are pushed forward. If it's not working on one side, pull the diamond shifters out and see if you have a broken pin. You can shift the shift collars manually when the diamond shifters are removed.

Thanks for the reply Mike, this site and the people on it are very helpful and keep me from pulling my hair out. The plunger has been like that even before I pulled the bolt. I've read the T20 adjustment procedures and will probably use the method I saw on route6x6 using adjustment tools. I like how I don't have to measure - seams just easier to me. I made my own tool like I saw another member on this site and am wondering if it would work? Does the tool need to be a certain thickness?

I pulled the diamond shifter, I can't really tell if the pin is long enough?

Hi Tony, That pin looks worn out to me. You can probably take that o-ring off and heat up the side of the barrel. Vice grips should pull it out. Replace the same way. Not sure what people are using for pins. Wait for another reply, shouldn't take long. Good luck Mike

I pulled the other side to compare and I could tell the difference between the two. The one pictured looks like somebody has already redone the pin. The other one I pulled looks factory. In any case, I was able to shift gears by hand using the pictured diamond shifter.

I hope to borrow a torque wrench tommorrow and get the adjustments done.

The 1st Hustler I had bought, someone had already drilled new holes 180 deg over and put in new (weak) pins and swapped shift diamonds left to right. Those were also worn/broke, so I ordered new shifter assemblies from Recreatives. Those pins are very hard metal.

So I tried to adjust the T20 bands today and think I may have a more serious issue. I started a thread in the Transmissions section describing what I found.
