What should I do?

I currently have a mid 90s 2 person MAX with a 16hp Vanguard and tracks. Last November the motor was throwing rods, but my father worked on it, and the motor seemed to run great. Last weekend we took it out in the woods for the first time after being fixed and after some heavy use through a freshly logged swamp (lots of stumps and ruts) the engine now sounds like its doing the same thing and will not stay running. I now have three options and need help making the decision.


Option 1:
Have the current 16 hp fixed at a local shop. Is 16hp enough power for a MAX II with tracks?

Option 2:
Order a new 18 or 23 hp motor. This is the most expensive choice

Option 3:
Fix the 16hp motor and sell the MAX for a set of tracks on my Yamaha Rhino 700. I like this option, but am concerned about capabilities of a tracked ATV vs 6x6 with tracks. Anyone have experience with this?

Tracks are going to require more HP. How much more depends on ALOT of factors. I'm sure the 16hp will run the track just fine depending on the terain you are driving through, but it will probably be very doggy. As far as fixing your motor or replacing it......get an estimate on the repair first. What type of tracks are you looking at? It may be cheaper to sell what you have and buy one with tracks already...hard to say, too many ifs.
