Well i just came back from my first trip with my max, all went well untill it started to break the grade 8 bolts that lock the drive gears to the axles. fixed 3 of them over the coarse of two days. and on the last day somthing snaped and i have extra left handle movment, did i break a band or what? can back up fine and go forward fine, but only tun to the right. I'm going to take it apart somtime this week and see what happend. where do we buy bands and who relines them? and is there any better way to secure the gears to the axles besides grade 8 bolts. thanks rob

I've had two T20's that had the eye pull of the band itself as Race describes. It's not a completely uncommon failure. I was lucky enough to have a spare band lying around in each instance, but there's no reason each of them couldn't be fixed. Coincidentally, each of these bands needed relining, too. I kept them for spares, and will get around to having them rewelded and relined at some point....sigpic

You could also just spot weld the band, no? Don't use grade 8 bolts for the axle to sprocket connection. I'm told that they are too brittle. Use Grade 5 instead. If your holes are oversized, you should fix that as well, or you will continue to shear bolts.

I use grade 8 bolts for sprocket connections because they will shear more easily. I would rather break a easy and cheap to replace bolt than any of the more expensive components of the drive line. You might try a different manufacturer, or supplier of bolts. Also bolt length makes a huge difference. you want the shoulder of the bolt to pass all the way through the sprocket tube, then use a washer if needed to be able to get the nut tight. this will result in a bunch of threads sticking out. cut off the excess and prepare a few spares to carry in your trail tool box. this thread discusses bolt length a little http://www.6x6world.com/forums/gener...ound-bolt.htmlA well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I've got new axles and repaired the sprockets with cup washers, and the bolts are body bound. everything is tight and right, was just wondering if you guys replace these bolts alot? I agree I would rather change bolts offten, then spend money on hard parts that are not cheap. The bands seem to be not as common to break, so I will be alil more gental on my quick turns. it was my first weekend running the max IV and have to admit I was testing it to the maxx. R.I wants 109.00 for the bands, not sure yet what route 6x6 wants but any other options would be great. but all in all the resto job with the new vangard 23 has been fun. thanks guys for your help.p.s how do we post pics?

Search the transmission forum for band reline or relining. There are several threads detailing companies that will reline your bands for much cheaper than that. The two companies that come to mind are Transmission Crafters and Alabama Bands, but look through the threads you find first and read about them. The only downside is that you have to ship your band off for two weeks so you will be without anything to drive for a while.
