dan I think you would have been ok if you had tread on your tires. It makes a big difference.

Working on replacing the old worn out shoes, overtime is paying for them. I'll know the week of July 4th if the 25" Avenger AT-189 tires will fit without rubbing the lower body. Otherwise I'll be getting the smaller 24" AT-189s

Depends on how you use them. If your terrain is easy on them, they coukd last decades.

There's a guy in some of the videos wearing a cowboy hat in what looks to be an XL-sized Hustler. I thought it was just the tires that made it seem so tall, but is it just a bigger model than the other Hustlers I'm used to seeing?

Since I'm the only loser wearing a cowboy hat and driving a Hustler on most rides, I'll go out on a wicked limb and assume you're referring to me. That's my riding hat. My Hustler 980 is what we refer to as a "Tall Tub" version, which is about 3 inches (right Race? I forget what we measured...) taller than the "Short Tub" 980, which is still huge. My tires are 27's, which are the same size as what Race' runs on his 980. To be honest, my 980 is pretty tippy in water, but you get used to it pretty quickly. With those tires (Kenda Executioners) it's pretty slow compared to a lot of other machines. It makes up for it's slowness in water with awesomeness on land.

I bet with the help of folks here (myself included) you'll be able to find a nice Max IV within your budget. Some folks (WTF is JP??) spend hours and hours (seemingly) searching for and finding machines that are in the most remote little corners of the country. I'll bet we can find something in the southeast for you, given enough time...

EDIT:: Just to respond to a couple more of the posts above..... Don't worry about being a big dude in a machine. The machines displace far more weight in water than you'll likely weigh anytime soon. That Hustler on Ebay is, quite frankly, priced about four times (conservatively) more than it's worth to most people. Who knows; someone may bite on it.

Soooo... do you want a Max IV or a Hustler 980 now? Hmmm?

I believe it was 2" inches, 31 and 33 stick in my head (measured to the body seam) but I was wrong that one other time, so it could happen again
one of these days we need to switch rides for a while. I've heard from several tall tub owners that they feel tippy in water, and I really haven't experienced that with my regular tub 980 at all.

I will agree with Mike that the 980 on EBAY is way over priced. sadly a lot of sellers don't seem to realize that with these things the whole isn't always worth the sum of it's parts. It has been my experience that you almost never got out of a machine what you put into it money wise. Luckily the enjoyment you get out of driving them usually does a real good job making up for that

Me and my wife are having a baby boy Sept 16th-ish. So I'm totally not in the market or awhile. Unless I find a free one. But I am a little confused now.......I was totally convinced that the Max IV was it, but now the Hustlers are in the conversation for sure.

these guys can help you pull machines and parts out of all the cracks in america, so if your looking for something they can point you in the right direction, as far as machines go, I too am a big happy guy at 5'11" and punishing every cheesburger I can find to keep my awesome 260 figure going, I have an Attex and a MAX 2(2) and they have no issues getting me around even with smaller engines and smaller tubs, I think the MAX IV may be a nice option for one of my Max2 to grow up to be, but really, any good running machine will get you on the trail

Yup. You blocked him forever and he hates you now. No, not really.... You just "reported" his post to Mike, the Administrator. No big deal; he needs to be reported once in a while.

If you're diligent about searching for a machine, one will pop up. They pop up when you're NOT looking for one. Actually, since you know that time and finances need to be dedicated to the family for a while, it's likely that dozens of machines will pop up literally down the road from you.

If you're mechanically inclined, you can probably find a machine cheaply that has very minor issues (take $3000 off because it "doesn't steer left", and it just needs a $1.00 shift pin and 20 minutes of your time, for example) It happens quite a bit, and it's frustrating when the need arises to save every one you come across....

(made by the same people who made Napolean Dynamite) and it had a couple of AATVs in it and got me looking. At that time I couldn't find a single one under $5000, but now that I REALLY can't afford it Im finding all kinds of deals. I'm not mechanically inclined so that will restrict how bold I am when I do finally become a buyer.

Mechanically speaking, these things are pretty simple. If you end up with a machine that needs minor repairs, we can probably talk you through it.

No need to start a new thread... better to keep it in one place than have multiple threads to clutter up the board. Admin Mike would just merge a second thread back into this one anyway. There are a few threads on the board that have been going for years.

Ok that's cool. If I knew it was gonna last this long I would have named it something different. I do have a question that I've wondered since I saw my first AATV. Why have I never seen one with a Honda? From everything I've ever been around whether it's push mowers or go-carts or pressure washers, generators, ATVs, etc........Hondas are the top. They have the best engines in most every category they're in they are the top. So why don't more people put them in AATVs? I understand why Argo, Max, and Hustler dont. They probably don't want to spend the $$$. What about all the guys who put in after market engines though?

I believe that there is someone on here that has a v-twin Honda in a Hustler. I thought about putting a Honda in mine, but I talked to the owner of the local mower/small engine shop and he told me that the "industrial" Honda engines (what we would use in an AATV) are not as well built as the Kohler or Briggs & Stratton engines, or even Honda 4 wheeler engines. They are also apparently somewhat difficult to get parts for.

That makes sense. I just went and looked up the Honda GX690 and its a 22.2hp with 36.5ft-lbs of torque......which I think is pretty good, but it costs $1,599.99.........so I won't be getting one until......well never! I'm just a poor country boy.

Yeah, I know about that poor country boy thing lol. I got a good deal on a 20 hp Kohler for my Hustler, but I can't afford the rest of the parts I need to finish putting it in! I'll finish eventully lol...
