  • max 4 popping noise when i turn left

I'm new two the 6x6 world, so any help would be great. got a 97 max 4 about a week ago. when i turn hard left i can hear a loud popping noise, i think from the chain. i was looking today and it looks like one side is missing a sprocket or tensioner. could this make that popping noise and can anyone give me the correct terminology so i can find a place that sells them..

    thanks ky max

Jack the max up in the air, put it in neutral and spin the tires forwards and backwards until you hear the pop. Then try to watch for it. Most likely, it is a chain misaligned with a sprocket like you said. The tensioner that you pointed to is the correct one. Are you missing it on the other side? If so, you can order one from your local max dealer or from the factory: Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511 You can also just post a wanted ad here on the site.

Finally, it's hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like the adjuster is most of the way down? If so, that can be a good indication that your chains are stretched and may need replacing.

i have an argo and had a similar problem, tight turns seem to produce a pop or clunk. it only happened when it was a tight turn. turns out i had two disintegrated bearings and too much movement on two axles. this movement translated to the sprockets and chains. since i replaced all the bearings the popping is gone. i'm not comparing my problem to yours mainly due to different machines but like mike said jack it up. wiggle the wheels and roll them keeping an eye on the chains and sprockets. also check for excessive wear on the sprockets and loose chains.
