How can you tell the year of a max II from the serial number?

We don't have a list of serial numbers on the site but if you will search the max forum you can find some that will help narrow yours down:

This thread says that a 13387 was built at the end of 1996 or the beginning of 1997.

So interpolating, your 14917 is probably a 1998 or 1999.

just call ri and ask they have a list of all the vin# and even can tell you the dealer that sold it!

It has a 18hp briggs vanguard
I am pulling the T20 to do a rebuild and just wanted to know the year for parts, but I know RI will have it I was just curious last night and thought I see if anyone had it.

call recreative industries.......I just bout a used MAX IV yesterday, the owner was "unsure" of the year,....SO I called RI gave them the serial number and they verified what I had was a 2005 950T (27hp kawasaki liquid cooled engine)
...........I think that is the best thing to know for sure is to give them a call
