  • max II for hunting?

hey all, I am looking at buying a restored 1970 max II with a 440 Polaris motor in it.

my question is this, how would said machine compare to an argo for hunting use?

I really like the Max II for how much fun it is(especially with the 440 2-stroke) but dont want to sacrifice hauling/towing capacity.

would a max II be happy with a moose strapped to it?

    thanks

While that would be a fun machine, that's not really ideal for hunting. It will be loud, smokey, smelly and not have the low end torque that you need for hauling stuff. I would look for a four stroke and perhaps something other than a Max II.

just picked up a different max II with an 18HP vanguard motor in it.
got it pretty cheap because it had a broken axle( but otherwise absolutely mint)

next question then is where to get new axles from, and how important would be upgrading to splined axles be?

Post a wanted ad here in the classified forum. Splined axles are nice but not necessary. As long as your axles are solid, they should work fine.

A quality axle can be made by any competent machine shop. Or try a post in the wanted section. The non splined axles have a bolt holding the sprocket tube in place. This bolt has a habit of elongating the holes thru the tube and axle over time. The splined version is probably a much better design, but is NOT necessary. Max II's like yours survived for 30 years the old way.
Drive it...have lots of fun...and someday buy a new machine with the new improvements.

yeah, I figured so, it looks like the PO drilled the axles out to use a bigger bolt to hold the sprocket in place, weakening the shaft.

I might have a lead on some axles already, thanks for the advice.

It's tough to put bigger bolts in....the holes are so close to the sprockets that the bolt heads/ nuts won't turn. The bolts should be a 7/16" fine thread.

that would be great! I am also in need of a sprocket, if you have one of those too.

just bought an axle and sprocket!
thanks Guy, hope to see you around again.

beginning to build a plow for it, and hope to have the axle installed by tomorrow night.
