  • Max II

I am a new member and just bought my first maxII with 14hp Briggs. I think it is a 2000 model it has the sqaure headlights. The guy I bought it from drove it periodically, but didnt really use it alot and only had it 2 years. I have been going through trying to make sure everything is just right with it. I adjusted the chains because they were a little loose. It has clean looking engine oil, but I really wanted to check the transmission fluid. In my owners manual and online it shows the check plug being on the back lower left part of the T-20 transmission. That puts it right behind the motor and seem nearly impossible to get too. What is the best way to check the fluid and any advice on what things I need to check out would be greatly appreciated. I wanna make sure everything is in order it seems to drive really well so far. Thanks

Hi twodogs, welcome to the site. There are a good many of us that live fairly close to you. For the T20 fluid, it is a little difficult to get to the bottom hole which is your drain hole as well as the fluid level hole. You can take a wrench and use your hand to feel your way around. The lower plug is the same size as the upper one. Other than that, check the air filter, fuel filter and spark plugs on the engine. Check your tire pressure and then go have fun.

      Thanks Mike,
The site is so helpfull and i really appreciate the response. I Just lifted the top of the tub up about 3 feet and that made it much easier to access the T-20. I am going to get everything today and I am going to change the fluid tonight. I have been reading a lot of the posts pertaining to what type of transmission fluid to replace the old with. It seems that there are a lot of different opinions and i dont like straying too far from a what a manual says. Do i replace it with Dexron II, III or some other and do i really need to mix in 4oz of GM Limited Slip?

It really doesn't matter about the additive. I always use it and it seems to quieten things down. For the ATF, that really doesn't matter too much either. I use type F.

          Thanks Mike,
I changed the Transmission Fluid with Dexron III transmission fluid. It had been slightly overfilled by whoever changed it last. I pushed it up a pretty good incline and let it drain. I was able to get about half a quart of the new in and i didnt get a whole lot of the Limited slip in i did flush the old out as good as possible by just filling the top and flushing it out the bottom. I drove it and get some noise out of the left side when turning right. The other side is smooth, but I think it might just be chattering on that side because I didnt get enough limited slip in. Why would one side make noise and the other not? It still drives really well though and it isnt like its struggling on that side it just makes some noise, roars when i give it the throttle on that side turnign and driving.
