  • Another newbie from NC

Doug here from around Raleigh NC. Just snagged up a Max II to use at my duck lease and she is needing a face-lift. I've always had ATV's, raced a few dirtbikes back in the day but this thing here looks so simple it is complicated. The biggest thing is I have 6 bad tires and need some replacements. Wheels are good so I'm just needing tires. Here is the first of many stupid questions I'm sure but does it matter what kind of tires you run as long as they are the correct size or do you need some type of flotation tire? Where are some good resources for purchasing parts for these? After I put some new feet on it I'm looking for a new body (top) and maybe a rollbar. Well I don't want to come off needy and all in my first post so I'm going to browse around a while. Looking forward to seeing everyone's ride and maybe learning a few things.

Hi Doug, welcome to the forums and congratulations on your Max II. The tub will provide the flotation but since the tires provide the only propulsion in the water, the type of tire and more specifically, the tread pattern, will matter greatly. You will want a chevron tread pattern and while tires are getting a little hard to find, if you will look in the tire section of this site, there are a lot of threads on what tires will and will not swim. The fastest tires will be tires manufactured for Argo (another brand of ATV). You can get those from your local Argo dealer (Bost ATV & Tune-up is close to you in Rockwell, NC). For the other parts you are looking for, you can find a Max dealer close to you or call the manufacturer directly: Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511

If you take a vacation to the factory...not only will you get a free tour, but also a good deal on a scratched or imperfect top. They won't use them if they have any flaw at all. It took me about 10 minutes to find the scratch in mine, but it's easy to understand why it would devalue a new machine.

Recreatives Industries is in Buffalo, NY, so if you're going to plan a trip, better make it soon before the town is frozen over in it's normal 6 months blizzard-fest. LOL. I bought my 1996 Max II direct from the factory and the folks were nice enough to give me a walking tour. The place is small, but it's really neat to see how everything goes together. I love the little swimming pool where they test each machine for water-tightness. Make a list and pick up all the stuff you need at one time. Good luck in your restoration and welcome to the madness. And be warned, these things seem to have a way of multiplying like rabbits in your barn/shed/garage. LOL.

Welcome to the site Straightline. You live close to one of the best ATV parks around. You are probably aware of Busco Beach and this is where the site has 2 really great rides. The next will be in April (date not set yet) where members travel from all around to have a great time. Hope you can make it to some of the rides and meet some of the great people that make up this site.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"
