i loosened the springs on my 03 max IV, i definitely can drive it better now

but one thing i noticed is that i am hearing a clunk/clank after i stop and when i push them to go forward, is this normal and ok?

going to try and put some pics in my folder now, no mods done yet but i have a list made for the welder who gets it next week, then i will post those!

    thanks

My first thought is you need to lube your plunger o-rings. I think your noise may be your brake lever popping back in place against the transmission. It it the U channel piece with the hitch pins at the top and bottom. If you move a control lever the shift lever will move. There are bolts at the top and bottom that attach to the plungers. The plungers are attached to the ends of the bands. The plungers have O-rings that need to be kept clean and lubed.

thank you for telling me this, and reading the next post about these it sounds like these are on the tranny soemwhere? if so this is a job for whipper becuase on my 03 IV the tranny is very hard to access
unless you can give me some pointers or maybe send of pic of the location

the way you described it sounds like what is happening though, i think it pops and the atv rolls forward a bit then stops

        more o ring stuff

i am curious if anyone has a pic of where these would be located and how to access them on a IV
i would like to lube them if i can
whipper is over 2 hours away and i don't know how long he will have to keep my machine so if i can do it i should

i am female but change the oil /fuel filters, etc on my modded powerstrokes and do quite a bit of my own mechanic stuff
i pretty much understand general mechanic stuff
so i can probably do it if i can get to it and if i get a better idea of what all these parts are you guys refer to
i looked on the tranny page and did not see any kind of diagram of parts
in the machine, is there one?

i would like to point out to anyone who works for ri that i found it a little annoying that i have to unscrew the seat , then remove the battery to even get down and kind of see any of this stuff
why didn't they make that seat removable???
i am paranoid about checking fluids and don't even want to drive it without knowing where the tranny fluid is but i am not set up to drag the motor out to get to it
i am sure you guys know all this

anyway if anyone has a pic or diagram i would appreciate it

          Hi Courtney,

I took a picture of a Buffalo Truck from the gallery that carrant posted up and circled the area where the plungers are in red. I am attaching that picture here in the post but here's a link to the original too without the circles so you can see it better:

There are four total. Two on the top and two on the bottom. Both are connected to that C channel by pins. Just push the sticks forward or pull them back and squirt a little oil in the hole that the plunger is in. That's about the best you can do.

          Hope that helps.

            THANK YOU!

            2 questions

first i guess the tranny/motor set up in the buffalo is way different or was this thing missing a motor? just curious

second right in front of the red circles you put there are those springs i loosened for the sticks, correct? if so i think i can at least handle getting them lubed until i get it to whipper and he checks it all

            thanks so much

Courtney You don't have to check the transmission fluid every time you use it. Just keep and eye on the seals and give the transmission a visual inspection when it is fluid change time. Yes it can be a hassle to get to these. I just pull the engine cover off and use a pressurized can of lube to give a shot to the plungers. I normally use PB Blaster or marvel mystery oil in a spray can. The o-rings will seal the oil from going into the transmission. The oil will just allow them to slide and not hang up.

                thanks jerry

it is not that i want to check it everytime it is just that i have never checked it!
this is a new machine to me, it only had 30 hourse - now 37 - but it is an 03 and that means it has sat around a lot which worries me some
and i am just a fanatic about knowing where my fluids are on all my equip/trucks
there is a lot of oil in the bottom of this thing, i think it is from the guy really spraying the chains but it just makes me paranoid
i am pretty sure nothing has been done on it since new so i was going to take it to whipper and have all the fluids changed and have him check everything

any upgrades i should do on a 03 IV i would love to know about, i keep my stuff in good shape and like it to last forever so if it needs anything it will get it

                thank you

Yes, the transmission and motor are in a different configuration but other than that, the setup on the transmission is the same.

And you are correct on those springs.

                    Courtney,
You wrote you were paranoid about checking the fluids and didn't want to drive it without checking them. I mistook that as you wanted to check them before every use. http://www.6x6world.com/forums/image...es/biggrin.gif
A person should check the engine oil.

Like Mike said they are different. The Buffalo has the bed that tilts up so everything is easy to get to. The Buffalo and the Max II have the transmission in front of the motor. The Max IV has it under the motor. It is a design a lot of people would like to see changed.

i know what you meant, it just freaks me out to drive something not knowing where the tranny fluid is, if i had checked it once and it was fine i would not be worried but i cannot get to it, although the day i was messing with it i was in a hurry becuase i wanted to drive it before all the daylight was gone, so maybe if i try again and get upside down in there i can get to the bolts, will see
i always check the oil, that one is easy

since the IV is so difficult to get to has anyone managed to put a dipstick in one so you could check it easier?
i guess we would have to pull it out build it outside the machine somehow and hopefully will only 30 hours mine won't need that for a while! so i am stuck

since it is popping back like you said i am worried those orings are dry, before i drive it again that will be oiled and now that i know where to look i will try to see if they are leaking
i will do all this stuff monday when i get it out to head to the welders

i need to get more familair with the machine, maybe spend some time with whipper and bridget and have them show me more stuff so i know what to lok for that could be a major problem
whipper drove this machine before i got it and said it was perfect so i am sure it is, i just want all the fluids changed and all maintenance up to date

                      thanks for all the help!

                        Courtney,

Here is a quick and cheap way to get peace of mind. Get a somewhat flat container that will fit under the t-20 in the back (I use one of my kids old pencil boxes). Take the 2 square plugs off the back of the trans. The one on the left is solid and lower and the one on the right has copper wire in a hole in the center this is the breather. This plug is higher than the other one. I usually take them off with a small adjustable wrench but you can use a socket I just don't remember the size right now. Get some type F transmission fluid and a small funnel with a long spout. Put some clear tubing on the end of the funnel so it can reach into the filler plug on the right side. Slowly fill it until you see fluid coming out of the left drain hole into the small container. Replace the plugs wipe everything off and your good to go. Make sure you put the proper plugs in the proper holes.

If you want to put all new fluid you need to find a way to drain it out of trans. Some people put the front of the vehicle on ramps, some use oil suction devices.

                        Good Luck

                        Mike

I use a suction device. Whenever I get a used machine I automatically change the transmission fluid and engine oil. Sucking it out works best for me to get it all out.

I have installed a 1/2" ball valve in the drain side with a piece of 1/2" clear tubing coming from it. You can route the hose through the drain hole to catch it with a can under the machine. That's a pain, so I get it close to the hole and drain it into the tub and then out the hole to a pan.
I lift the front with my winch or without a winch I lift with a come along to get the headlights about eye level.

well i lubed the o rings and think the machine is probably fine even though i cannot check fluid, they do not appear to be leaking
thanks for all the info, was good to learn where some of this stuff was and play with it today
