  • 2000-2001 Max 4 Person Price Check??

Hello,All I have found a max 2000 or 2001 this machine looks great and has the 18 hp briggs engine ,has low hours and this unit has 26 " tires on it ,the thing is huge ,the person is asking 5500.00 for this machine ,I am just wondering if this is a good deal ???,it has the camo wrap on it so no big scratches or busted places on it ,it is really clean so any input would be greatly appreciated thanks Karl aka MR.SNAKE!!

There are a lot more things to look for such as the condition of the bearings, chains, how many hours are on the engine, were the fluids and was regular maintainence performed as it should have been? I would say that his asking price is a little too high and I doubt that he will ever it, unless everything one the machines is rebuilt.

I agree that the price seems a little on the high side. It could be that it really wasn't used much at all but still I think you could do better than that. I've seen Max IV's in perfect condition and similar age sell in the lower $4000 range.

Karl, I may not be in town the next two weekends but I could try to make it by there after work one day next week and just check it out for you. Do you know what time they close? That place is right on main street next to the railroad tracks isn't it?

No problem. If you don't hear back from me by this time next week, remind me again. I should be able to get by there at the beginning of next week.

If I'm not mistaken, that machine has been there for a while. One of my friends told me about a max being there when I bought my Argo, which was roughly a year and a half ago. That might not be a bad thing though.

True, you might have some bargaining power there.

Ok, I had training today and I got out early so I stopped by to see this Max IV. The owner's son let me look at it and was kind enough to let me get behind the sticks. From taking it around the field across the parking lot, I didn't find anything wrong with it. The axles seemed to be straight, there was no noise like a bad bearing makes, the transmission worked properly and even seemed to be adjusted properly as well.

Looking in the tub, the bearings had grease coming out of them and it had it on the zerks. The chains didn't appear to be wearing improperly, they were straight, the belt on the motor was straight. The owners son basically just verified what you said...it was only used a few times. Mainly for hunting. I commented on the grease coming out of the bearings as being a good sign and he said that it was probably from the factory, further hinting that it was only used very little.

I have to say that I believe that. Mechanically I don't think you would have any problems out of it. It does have the splined solid axles which is of course a plus.

For your reference the serial number was 17,423.

Now on to some of the negatives, mainly cosmetics. The camouflage is the stick on kind from camo clad. It appears to be applied well but it is scraped off in several places where it has rubbed up against trees. It also doesn't cover the entire body. Also, the upper tub was a little warped along the edges. It looked like it may have come down on a trailer or some tree stumps and caught the edge of the tub.

I'm being very picky when I say that. Really for an AATV, even the body is in great shape. The only real downside is that stick on camo. I don't know if you like that but over time it will probably continue to come off in places and may look bad. I don't know how easy it would be to take off or if it would leave a residue at all.

Also, it had some water in the tub but I think that's just because of where it's sitting. It is under the walkway cover there at the gun shop but I think it's close enough to the edge that the wind probably blew it in there.

Finally, the battery was dead. I had to pull start it. But, that's probably just from sitting without running for quite a while.

Alright, there is my run down. I would happily own that Max. Just from what I saw, I think it would give you problem free riding. The only thing left is the price.

Ultimately that is up to you. Personally I would offer the guy $4000 or $4500 and see what he said, especially since he's had it for sale for a while. I've seen some Max IVs with the same options plus the roll bar go for a lot cheaper than that. And they weren't parts machines or fixer-uppers either. They were just like this one, used very little.

It really depends on you. If you are patient and want to look around, you can probably get one in the exact same condition for $4-5k. If you're tired of looking, I would go bargain with the dude and pick it up.

Let me know what you do. If you pick it up, we'll have to go riding once you get used to it.

I took some pictures too. I had the engine cover off though to start it and look inside the tub so don't let that throw you.

                            Mike Cherryville Max

I would like to say thanks to you mike for going and checking the max out for me ,it seems like a good max ,and I value your comments greatly, the camo issue ,I am not sure how hard it would be to remove ,but I would try,I think this guy has been trying to sell it for a long time as well ,I think if I showed up with cash ,it might change his mind ,maybe not ,but it never hurts to try . I want to go by and ride it myself ,and maybe take the wife ,she is alot tougher than the seller ,and she beats me on a regular basis . hehe thanks mike for all your help. Karl aka mr.snake !!
