  • Chasing down a Max IV

Well every now and then a deal slips away. When it's one of those really, really great deals it totally bums me out for a while. This was one of those situations, but it turned out to have a happy ending not very long after. I'm driving home from work Monday and I see a nice late 90's model Max IV on the side of the road for sale. It must not have been out long because I take the same route home every day and hadn't seen it yet. I figured it was going to be a bit pricey since it looked pretty good. I got a closer look at it and it was missing the engine and transmission but everything else looked great (except for the horrible homemade body band/bumper thing). It had some nice options on it like heated throttle cable, 26's, and splined axles. A guy pulls up in a yellow wrecker and says, "it's sold" I ask how much it went for and he says a number that was VERY low. Ughhhhh, I wish I could have got it. I tell him I'd give an extra hundred for it. He hastily replies, "no", and I figure that one slipped away. I was going to pick it up for 6X6World member AmphibiousDrew, since he was after a Max IV. I send the pictures over to him and now we're both kicking ourselves.

Fast forward to today. I check Craigslist when I get home from work and it says "ATV" under a listing with a price of $100 more than the guy told me it sold for. It had 25" Rawhide III's on it rather than the 26's that were on it when I saw it. Other than that it was all the same. The ad was posted about half an hour before I saw it so I figured I had a good chance to grab it. I call the guy and it's still available so I tell him I'll be right there, then I hook the trailer up and GO! I saw the same yellow wrecker in the picture on the Craigslist ad that was in the parking lot of where I first saw the Max on Monday so I knew for a fact it was the same machine. I go there, pay for it, and load up the machine and then the guy shows me his Max IV and it has the 26's on it that were on this machine. He just swapped the wheels and tires real quick and flipped the machine for an extra $100, but it was still one of those really great deals. I call up Drew and tell him I got his Max IV, and the rest is history. Sometimes things just work out.

You've got something to aim for now, Drew. Time to build that new Max IV up! We're going to have quite the crazy pack of Max IV drivers now between Mike, Drew, Robbie, and Mark just to name a few.
