  • Max IV has no low end power. Need help!

I have a 96 Max IV with 20hp Kohler Magnum. From all I've read this machine should have some muscle to it on low end. The engine is strong and runs great, but can't get up any kind of half steep slope. It just feels sluggish or maybe like its slipping as I build speed.

It sounds like the typical belt loose/worn/not adjusted properly issue. It could also be your clutches not engaging properly. Try lubing them and you might even need to replace the driven clutch spring if it's worn. This should fix the problem. The low end is where these machines really shine, especially with a torquey 20HP Kohler.

Everything jpswift1 said, plus be sure that the sticks are fully engaged in the forward position when tackling hills. Some drivers have a tendency to slightly pull back when on an incline.

I made sure to push sticks forward as I drove, but can't tell difference. I noticed the clutch pulley on the tranny is rusted pretty bad on where the belt moves in and out of it. This has got to create a problem I would think. Could this heavy rust slow the belt from traveling on it?

The heavy rust on the face of the driven clutch would wear your belt out prematurely. This can be a big problem. Also, the belt has most likely worn to a narrower width and it is probably too loose.

I just went out and measured the width of my drive belt. It is apprx. 1 inch wide. So there's quite a bit missing from the rust.

That's probably the issue. The belt is supposed to be 1 3/16" wide.
