  • Max II Hard to Turn Left

First off hello everyone......i got me a "87 max 2.....it's been sitting outdoors for awhile and needs a bit of work....i have so far got it cleaned out...loosened up...and pretty much running....it has the 16hp b/s.....i think i'm still not getting a good fuel supply to it.....the problem i noticed is that i can turn right just fine but it really takes some effort to turn left.......i'm thinking about pulling the trans apart this weekend......i hope it's just stuck and not need new pad.......i've found out parts are really hard to find in my area.......but so far i've been lucky and nothing to serious seems to be missing or wrong with it.....i'll post up pics tomorrow.....too dark right now to snap a few...........hopefully i can help out here....i'm a mechanic and bodyman full time....i own two 4wheelers and this is my first 6x6.....i seen one back when i was 7 years old at the county fair and ever since then i wanted one.....now to get it going.........

Welcome to the site Captn. The t-20 is a very simple and very durable trans, but the lining material on the bands does wear out eventually. Before tearing into the trans make sure it is adjusted correctly, each of the plungers (4) that you can see from the outside of the case pulls on a separate band. You could have one band not able to tighten around it's drum. All the parts for a MaxII are easy to find, but sometimes cheaper to make.....just ask for what you need and we'll point you in the right direction.
If you post up your location, you may get another local member to help out. Beer=cheap labor. And you may get offers to go on group rides.

It's working now.Have you changed your fuel lines or cleaned the carb.

From the looks of the video, it seems to run fine. Looks like your rear passenger tire needs air, so your tire circumferences could all be out of whack. Get all the tires the same circumference, then try turning. Put on blocks & check for bad bearing noise. (It has been sitting a long time.)That's a lot easier than pulling a T-20, which rarely goes bad, even when abused or neglected. Always check out the simple stuff first.

i think i may of bent the float in the carb out of adjustment.....i was messing with it and noticed that i'm getting a mist of gas spraying up from carb........as far as i can tell theres no adjustment to the main jet....i have replaced the lines and cleaned the carb twice........i think a few more beers and i may get it......

tomorrow i'm going to air up all the tired and re-try the trans out.......it has been sitting for awhile....could just need rode some....

well i finally got it back together....made the seat and wiring is done....still have the steering problem....i'm thinking i need to pull the t-20 apart........i'm thinking the bands are worn or damaged.......turns right alright....it really takes pulling hard on the stick to get it to go left........also i'm starting to think there isn't alot of members here......figured i'd get more responses.......slow month maybe

A huge portion of the sites member base has been preping for the races in Ashtabula OH over the last several weeks, so the site has been a bit slow. Before you pull the T-20, try running both of the left side plunger bolts in about a turn. See if that makes a difference in how it turns. If it is better like that, you probably just need to get everything back into proper adjustment. I will search around for a good thread on that procedure and update this post when I find it
