  • Max iv axles

Just out of curiosity, what is the length of a splined MAX IV axle? I heard that the axles on the MAX are shorter but thicker than that of a Hustler. I know you guys know what I'm getting at! OK,,,,,, I'm wondering if I can get a Max IV setup and put it into the Hustler with a few modifications like:

    1. 1-2 inch wheel extensions (on the hub)
    2. modified center-two sprocket group to match the Hustler center-three sprocket group
    3. 1 1/4 bearings with flanges

Soooooo, what do you guys think? I guess maybe we can start with the measurements! A Hustler's axles is 21 inches long from the base of the hub to the end of the axle that goes into the center (small) bearing.

I thought about this too, Fred, but unfortunately the Max IV axles are a good bit shorter than the Hustler ones. If they were the same length it'd be so easy to upgrade to Max axles/sprockets/bearings in our Hustlers. The Max IV axles would need to have the splines cut farther out toward the hub for the sprockets to be positioned correctly even if you were to use a hub spacer to compensate for the shorter axle length. BUT, I do think you could run Max IV axles with the hub spacers on the rear two axles because the sprockets on them are positioned more inboard and the splines wouldn't need to be cut longer. The sprockets on the fronts and middles would because the sprockets on them are mounted farther out toward the outer frame rail.

Thanks a lot Jeff, for the info. I just measured the need distance that the splined need to be cut and it measured roughly 9-10 inches from the inner to outer bearings. So it may be possible to use the axles, they just need to be cut more with some real beefy hub extensions. How beefy of a hub extension? How long is a MAX IV axle? Some may say that if you cut the axles longer that you might as well cut new ones altogether. I raised this question because I know that we are not the only members who has thought of this, nor will we be the last!

Fred, I have no plans of taking my Hustler on another big ride till it has splined axles. My plan is to buy the cutter for my mill and make my own axles, as all options I've explored for using existing parts have lead to dead ends. For the sprockets, I will do the same thing I did here: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/gener...e-upgrade.html
