  • Sprocket on a Max IV

Hey guys, I'm new! Now that we've got that out of the way, on to the fun stuff. So I'm at some property of my inlays yesterday throwing some boxes in a dumpster and I spot some kind of AATV. I threw the boxes away and drove back around to what I saw. It was a Max IV. I didn't know specifically what model it was until I got home and researched it. I did however find out while I was there that it runs, just doesn't drive. It doesn't drive apparently because of a broken sprocket. I'm hoping you guys can help me figure out what specific sprocket it is so I can order a new one. Any way..... I ask my father in law if his son and I can work on it. Today I get a text asking when I'm coming to pick it up, IT'S MINE! So now I REALLY want to get this thing running.

The sprocket LOOKS to be from - If you're behind the Max, to the right of the motor, between the outer sprockets (to the right) and the motor, the sprocket should go there (at the bottom). It's a 15 tooth sprocket.

I also know nothing else about these things besides riding in one with a friend like 15 years ago (long time when you're only 26). So any other general ideas of what to check would be great. I was told it would drive until the sprocket broke (you can tell it's been welded on before).

On to the only pictures I have of it until I go look at it again Thursday after work. I'm supposed to pick it up by the end of the weekend.

    And the problematic sprocket:

I'm in Kentucky if anybody wants to ride once it's back together! I've got 540 acres available to ride on with a few ponds and stuff!

    Thanks ahead of time,
    Evan

Sure looks like a t-20 sprocket to me.
Call the factory 1-800-255-2511 They will help you out.

      The t-20 is your transmissionIMG_1019.jpg
It will look like one of these.

Thanks! I'll look at that when I'm over there Thursday. Sadly, the sprocket was laying on the seat when I found it so I'm not 100% sure where it came from. Where on the transmission would it be that I should look? On the left or right side? Sorry for so many questions I just know zero about these things besides them being a ton of fun! I'm a decent mechanic so fixing it won't be an issue once I figure out what it is I'm supposed to do.

I plan on giving her a bath on Thursday. Also, the wheels will be getting powdercoated gloss black before it gets running hopefully.

Click on my picture of the t-20's and it will pop up larger. You will be able to see the sprockets.

Power is transmitted via the belt from the motor to the t-20 (the 2 pulleys are variable clutches).
The t-20 splits the power to each side of the machine by way of the sprockets on each end.
When you pull back on the sticks you are applying brakes(inside the t-20) to that side of the machine, while still providing full power to the other side.
I think the sprocktet is about $35-40, if you own a lathe, you can make one yourself from a $10 generic sprocket.
          Hope that helps.

It does help! Hopefully when I go check it out Thursday it'll all be more clear, and I'll take pictures!

So I'm going to stop by and look at the Max tonight, are there any pictures that I could get that would help get some advice not only on what sprocket it broken, but also what kind of other items might need to be addressed?

              I already know that......
              A) The key is broken off in the ignition
              B) The muffler has broken/rusted off
              C) I need to figure out what sprocket is needed.

Supposedly it runs, so I'm going to try to as least get it started tonight just to make sure that's the case.

So it's for sure the sprocket off the right side of the trans!
Anybody have experience replacing one of these sprockets?

                  A) The ign switch is a common thing. NAPA or a lawn mower shop should have one.
                  B) The muffler is easy too. The header is the hard/expensive item, but there are multiple types. A picture might help us find you a new one.
                  C) I've replaced the sprockets with the trans apart, but never without tearing it down. I've heard it can be done, but I still bet you will need to remove the t-20 from the machine.
Also be careful of how far onto the shaft it gets pressed on.....they don't go all the way to the shoulder.

Turns out I do have a motion industries right up the road from my house. I called and they said unless I had the part number, he has no idea what I'm talking about. Anybody know the part number that I'd need?

There's no manufacturer part number that Motion Industries will likely have. Give RI (Recreative Industries) in Buffalo a call (1-800-255-2511). They manufacturer the T-20 transmission, and will be able to get you a new sprocket for the output shaft. The sprocket is a pretty specific part, and likely doesn't have another common application.
