  • Max II Frame Out Restoration

    100_2230.jpg100_2225.jpg100_2227.jpgHi guys , I've decided to do a frame out resto. on my Max II. I've cleaned everything and will repaint the frame, repair some areas of the plastic tub, replace outer bearings, inner brass bushings, chains...etc. Have a few questions and will take any pointers...Thanks !!
    I'll post some more pics as I move along..
    Here are my questions :
    1) the pic with the 3 parts in it..they were in the tub after removing the frame...Are they parts that's needed or things left from previous owner?
    2) I watched Mikes vid on Axle/bearing replacement ( Great job Mike !) I noticed the bearing was put between the two bearing flange pieces and sealed with silicone...my Max had one flange mounted on the outside of the tub and the other on the inside ??
    3) The brass bushings are 1"ODx3/4"ID x 1" long ...I should be able to get these and the chain at my local bearings& drives center ?
    4)Some of the holes in the sprockets/axle are worn...would it be recommended to drill with next size bolt dia. ?

    1) They don't belong to this machine.
    2) Both flanges belong on the outside of the tub. One flange will often be on the inside of the frame just to reinforce the bolt head at frame connection...kind of like a giant washer.
    3) Yes- or McMaster-Carr or where ever bearings are sold. BUT, they are press in, and the brass/bronze alloy is softer than the steel so your inner 3/4" measurement will shrink. You will need to ream it with a 3/4" drill bit.
    4) you can drill the 7/16" holes out to 1/2" on the rear axles only. On the center and front it wont leave enough room for the bolt and nut heads to turn. It is a better idea to drill a different hole 90 degrees from the worn out hole, and weld up the other hole....A good drill press and a lathe are very handy if not necessary here.

      Thanks Jim ! ...also..freeze bushings before hand and maybe heat axles..will help on the pressing in ?

        That really isnt needed, they push in pretty easy. If you dont have a press, a block of wood and a hammer works.
