So I have been looking for a 6x6 for a while. I think I found one and wanted to consult the many experts on this site. It is a 2005 MaxII with the 23 horse kholer engine. From what I have watched and read this is plenty of power for the small unit. How fast will it go with the 23 hp engine? From what he has said the body is in great condition. It is equipped with a 2500# winch, roll bar, sump pump (bilge), additional lights, and tires with one inch of tread left. Apparently the tranny was recently rebuilt (new bands) which I assume is pretty common. One thing that puzzles me is that it doesn't have an hour meter. Should that be a concern? I have done some research and it seems this is a great price ($2,500.00), almost to good. It doesn't have a title. I have looked through the archives on the site and this seems common due to the stamping of the serial number on the body, is that accurate? I know these things are sold all over and I want to make sure I am not buying anything that was stolen!! I think that is my biggest concern without a title. Is there anyway to check that out? I think that is it. Does it sound like something I should jump on, or priced appropriately. All comments are appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like a really good price. The lack of an hour meter is common so that's not a big concern. Also, like you mentioned, it's pretty common for these ATVs to be sold without a title so I wouldn't worry there. The top speed will probably be in the 25 mph range but with the 23HP motor, it will get there quickly and have plenty of power for you. The only thing I would be concerned about is having to rebuild the T20 already with new bands. That doesn't sound right on a 2005. I'm not saying it's not possible. Things happen, who knows, it could have not had any transmission fluid in it.
If I were you I would get the serial number and call the factory to verify that it is a 2005 model. If everything looks good and it runs fine I wouldn't hesitate to buy it at that price. Go take it for a spin and see what you think. Good luck with the purchase.

You can call Recreatives direct and give them the serial# to verify the year. A 2005 model should not have required a rebuild even with alot of abuse. The acception to the rebuild would be if it had been sunk and the transmission took in water. I've seen T20 transmissions sitting in water filled machines 30+ years old, and once the fluid was changed they functioned properly.
I would say the normal range of value for a top shelf Max2 (which this would be with solid splined axles and the biggest engine available) would be $4,000-$5,000. It may be that you just found an excellent deal.
Also, you can have the local police run the serial # to make sure this machine wasn't stolen.

It does have the solid splined axels, forgot that in the original post. I was also told there is a small leak in the right rear of the tub from the seal on the axel. Maybe the T-20 did take a bath. He said it was common. Is that true? Thanks for the response, and checking with the police sounds like a good plan. I thought it sounded like a good idea, but this will be my first 6x6 and I wanted to be sure.

It's not very common for T20's to fail unless they were neglected (low fluid, water or sediment in them, etc.) or had the wrong fluid in them. As for the seal leaking, that's a fairly common thing. Most amphibious ATVs leak a little water after the bearings have a few dozen hours on them. If it's just a little water, it could possibly take care of itself when you grease the bearings. If it is a lot of water then you should just plan on eventually replacing the bearing.

If everything is on the level that is an excellent price for this machine. As far as the transmission being rebuilt there is another possibility, someone might have filled the transmission with gear oil, which is a common mistake for those who don't know not to. And it is just as bad for the bands as water.DESTRUCTION is just a couple of vowels down the street from DISTRACTION

Sounds like a winner to me as far as price. Even if it needed some work to the bearings I still think it would be worth it. When I got Mel's Max II I spent $2400 and it was a 2000 with splined axles, roll bar, and 18hp B&S.Hold My B..R and Watch This!!!
